Wednesday 9-5-18: Nintendo Direct Tomorrow, Oldschool Runescape Mobile Release Date, and Prey’s Rougelike Update

Hello folks! It’s a day of news, particularly one of video games. Here is that news.

  • Nintendo Direct Tomorrow
  • Oldschool Runescape Mobile Release Date
  • Prey Mooncrash Update

Nintendo Direct

Nintendo has announced their next Direct. Taking place tomorrow at 3PM CT/6PM ET and running about 35 minutes long, the direct will cover a variety of Nintendo Switch and 3DS titles. You can watch the direct live video this webpage, or through the YouTube video embedded above. I’d love to speculate what it may show. But to be honest, I have no idea.

Oldschool Runescape Mobile Release Date

Remember when Jagex announced a mobile version of the popular online MMO? Well it’s finally coming soon. According to a recent statement, the mobile variant is launching on Android and iOS on October 30. It will offer full cross-platform play with PC. It can be “pre-registered” on the Android and iOS markets respectively. You can read more about it on the announcement post.

Prey Update

Prey’s recent DLC Mooncrash featured a new, roguelike game mode taking place on the moon. To celebrate the genre, developer Arkane has announced an update, known as Rouge Moon. The free update implements new skins for the little robot guys that you can find around the game (I think they’re called operators?). Each skin is a homage to various famous roguelike games, such as Risk of Rain, Spelunky, and so on.

That’s all for today, tune in tomorrow for another news post. Otherwise, have a great day!

Tuesday 9-4-18: 2K Tells Fans to Ask Belgum for Paid Loot Boxes, Dream Daddy Noclip Documentary, and Anthem’s Free DLC

It’s not labor day anymore, so prepare for MORE labor! And also some news.

  • 2K Games Asks Fans to Write to Belgium Allowing Loot Boxes
  • The Dream Daddy Noclip Documentary
  • Anthem’s Free DLC

2K Asking Nicely

If you’ve been tuning in to the loot box controversy, you may already know that Belgium has initiated new laws that don’t allow certain forms of loot boxes and microtransactions, classifying them under local gambling laws. This change forced NBA 2K to update their game, removing the ability to purchase randomized packs for real-world money.

Well, being a corporation wanting to increase profit margins, 2K has issued a statement. In this, they express their disagreement with Belgium’s new legislation (though they do comply) while also asking their fans to write to the Belgian government asking them to revert their decision

They’re literally asking their player base to rally for them charging you more for game content. That’s cool.

Dream Daddy Documentary

A new Noclip documentary has been released, and it’s about the development of Dream Daddy, the dad dating simulator by the Game Grumps. Running 35 minutes long, producing and hosting was by lanah Pearce while filming and editing was by Jeremy Jayne. You can watch it above.

Anthem’s Story DLC Will be Free

According to an announcement by BioWare, their upcoming shooter RPG Anthem will not have a season pass option, because all story DLC will be free. While they did not expand on what exactly players can expect from future DLC, the fact it specifies as “story” leads me to believe campaigns will be free, while optional features like cosmetics will be available for real-money purchases. Either way, good to see an EA game not being entirely greedy.

That’s all for today, tune in next day (tomorrow, that is) for the next news post. Otherwise, have a great day!

Monday 9-3-18: Ray Man in Brawlhalla, Scum Removes Nazi Tattoos, and Valkyria Chronicles Coming to Nintendo Switch

Monday! That’s this day, I think. Here’s the news.

  • Ray Man Joins Brawlhalla
  • Scum removes neo-Nazi tattoos
  • Original Valkyria Chronicles Coming to Nintendo Switch

RayHalla

According to an announcement by the Brawlhalla Twitter account, Ray Man will be joining the game roster on November 6. That’s all they said, really. Still, that’s cool.

Less Nazi Tattoos

Scum, a recently released survival game featuring incarcerated criminals, recently updated their game to remove the previously available Nazi tattoos. The tattoo options, an iron cross with a skull on it and the number ’14’ and ’88’, was originally made available to those with the $10 supporter pack. The developers stated the following reason for its inclusion

“Our intention was to create an atmosphere of the worst of the worst criminals in Scum, and to portray the horrible type of people who would find themselves in a ‘fight to the death’ situation for a futuristic reality show where the worst criminals are pitted against one another.”

The devs and the publisher have both apologized for the insensitivity.

Valkyria Chronicles 1 Coming to Switch

According to an announcement by SEGA at PAX West this weekend, Valkyria Chronicles 1 will be released on the Nintendo Switch eShop on October 6 for $20. We learned before that Valkyria Chronicles 4 is coming to U.S. consoles on September 25. Those who purchase Valkyria Chronicles 4 will get a $5 discount on the first game.

It’s important to note that this is NOT a remaster, but a direct port.

That’s all for today, tune in tomorrow for even more news and such. Also, I’ve started a community for video game news on Pillowfort.io, for those interested. It’ll be sources other than my site, but I’m adding to and moderating it all the same. Otherwise, have a good day!

Friday 8-31-18: Star Citizen Con-troversy, and new PEGI Classification

Welcome back to the show! Today’s guest: news! Come on down!

  • Start Citizen Devs Charge $20 for Livestream Access, then Don’t
  • PEGI Adds Microtransaction Disclaimer

Star Citizen Con

Get it? Con as in convention, but also con as in being tricked out of your money. CIG, developers of the infinitely developed space-faring game Star Citizen, recently announced that in order to watch the CitizenCon live stream, you had to purchase a $20 digital ticket. Of course, all of the Kickstarter backers in the community were chuffed in the bad way about this. after a day or so of pitchforks and torches, a staff member responded.

He claims that they originally did not intend to live stream the event, due to the way it “adds a low six-figure amount to the cost of the event.” So to help offset this, they suggested the digital ticket fee. They then stated that the opening and closing keynote will NOT be limited by a digital ticket, while all the panels between will. I get that it was a large event. But you don’t have to spend $100,000 on live streaming, there are more affordable alternatives.

PEGI Rating Change

The European games rating board has recently announced a new policy for game disclaimers. Now, games with in-game purchases will be required to display a disclaimer image on the cover. Personally, I’m a fan of this decision.

That’s all for today. Tune in Monday for more news. Check out the latest episode of the Cozy Co-op Podcast. This time, we talk about Super Mario Odyssey. Otherwise, have a great weekend!

Thursday 8-30-18: Dream Daddy Comic Book and Nintendo DMCA’s Nintendo Essentials

Like sand in an hourglass, these are the video games of our lives.

  • Dream Daddy: The Comic Book
  • Nintendo DMCAs Pokemon Essentials

Dream Daddy Comic Series

Developer and Publisher Game Grumps have recently announced that their popular dad dating game will be receiving a six-issue comic book series with Oni Press, with the first one available now. The first issue focuses on “fitness dad” Craig as he joins the protagonist for a college reunion. More information, including where to purchase the first issue, can be found on the Oni website.

Nintendo Takes Down Pokemon Fan Game Maker

If you’re a fan of fan games, you may have heard of Pokemon Essentials. It’s a game making toolkit that gives the user a friendly interface for setting up their own Pokemon games. Recently, this project “and all downloads for it have been taken down due to a copyright claim by Nintendo of America.” This has sparked some community outlash, primarily from the Pokemon Essentials community. Many are confused as to why, after 11 years, Nintendo only now issued the takedown. While this is unfortunate for those who invested their time in the project, I can’t say this is a surprise.

That’s all for today, tune in tomorrow for the final news post of the week. Otherwise, have a great day!

Wednesday 8-29-18: The Forest for PS4 and Spelunky 2 Gameplay

Hello everyone! There wasn’t much to report on yesterday, forgive me. Here’s today’s news.

  • The Forest Comes to PS4
  • Spelunky 2 Gameplay Footage

The Forest on PlayStation

One of the best open-world survival horror games is finally coming to PS4. According to a PlayStation Blog post by Anna Terekhova, Game Developer for Endnight Games Ltd, the game will be coming to consoles on November 6. The Forest is one of the few survival horror games I actually enjoyed. It’s come a long, long way from when it first gained popularity.

It WILL support multiplayer, but no word on is it’ll have PSVR compatibility. Those wanting VR will have to stick to PC.

Spelunky 2 Gameplay

For the first time, we see gameplay of the upcoming Spelunky 2. In it, we see new areas, monster, items, and characters. The game will star Ana Spelunky, daughter of the first game’s protagonist, as they play with other players, now online! It’s best simply watched yourself. Video above.

That’s all for today. Tune in tomorrow for more news and things of that nature. Otherwise, have a great day!

Monday 8-27-18: Madden Tournament Shooting, Smash Bros is 2018’s Best Seller, and The Weird Cube in Fortnite

Here’s another one of those things week call the work week. And in that, is the news. Here is that news.

  • Madden Tournament Shooting
  • Smash Bros Best Seller of 2018
  • The Weird Fortnite Cube

Mass Shooting in Florida

Over the weekend was the Madden NFL 19 tournament in Jacksonville, Florida. The event was cut short when a shooter open fired, killing two, injuring nine, and then turning the gun on themselves. As a rule for myself, I don’t report the names or identities of shooters when this happens. But in the interest of journalistic integrity, I feel it’s important to note that the shooter was a competitor for the tournament who had lost earlier on. If you want, the moment was captured on stream, and footage of the event can be viewed on Timothy Burke’s Twitter. Be wary.

My sympathies go out to the friends and family of Elijah Clayton and Taylor Robertson, AKA Trueboy and Spotme. I wish a healthy recovery for those injured as well.

Smash Bros Ultimate: 2018 Best Seller

We’ve seen a lot of amazing titles this year. God of War, Monster Hunter: World, and more have already established themselves as GOTY contender. And yet, Super Smash Bros is beating them in sales. Not releasing until December, the party fighting game’s preorders have already exceeded that of the previous titles. This doesn’t come as a great surprise. The Smash Bros series has always been one of Nintendo’s greatest properties. I may have to set a preorder, myself. There might not be any available on release day at this rate.

Fortnite and the Giant Cube

We’re starting to approach the end of the current season on Fortnite. Which means the weird, in-game events are back. It began with regular lightning strikes, gradually destroying cacti. After increasingly frequent strikes, a large purple cube formed on the map. Attacking the cube causes it to attack back, often knocking the player far away from their destination. You can actually see the cube forming on Ninja’s stream during a summer Skirmish event. The season ends late September, so expect things to keep building until then.

Friday 8-24-18: Super Mario Party Only Uses Joycons and Denuvo Developing Anti-Cheat Software

Friday is here, you can tell by the way the planet rotates. Here’s the news.

  • Super Mario Party Won’t Support Pro Controllers
  • Denuvo to Develop Anti-Cheat Software

Super Joycon Party

According to a report by nextn.es, Super Mario Party for the Nintendo Switch will only support gameplay with the Nintendo Joycon. This, in turn, means it won’t support the Pro controller. I can understand this in the interest of keeping controls equal and fair. But the sideways Joycon is easily the least comfortable control scheme to use on the console. Not that I intended to buy the game anyway, to be honest.

Denuvo Anti-Cheat

The infamous anti-piracy company has quietly broken into the anti-cheating business of video games. Denuvo announced that their new system will be coming soon, and will prevent hackers from messing with the game code to gain an advantage over others. They made a point to mention that this includes trying to bypass microtransactions and the otherwise “dilution of the value of the game for the user and the game studio.”

Call me distrusting here.

That’s all for today, however. Tune in Monday for another week of video game news! Otherwise, have a great weekend!

Thursday 8-23-18: Supermassive’s 4 Games and Streamers Protesting Twitch Prime Changes

See? More news! I told you this day would come. Here is that news.

  • Until Dawn Developers Dedicated to Four Games
  • Streamers Protest Recent Twitch Prime Ad Change

Supermassive Quadrilogy

First reported by Kotaku, The developers behind Until Dawn intend to develop four games, each dedicated to classic horror movie subgenres. Formally referred to as the Dark Pictures Anthology, it began with Until Dawn, with the currently in development Man of Medan up next. I look forward to seeing what they have planned.

Twitch Turbo Changes

People were upset when Twitch announced that the partnership bonus, Twitch Prime, would be losing their ad-free feature. The service was available for anyone with Amazon Prime, offering benefits such as a free monthly sub, monthly games, and (until next month) ad-free viewing. To protest this, many partnered streamers have been disabling their ad option in protest. It’s noted that this only effects partnered streams that opt out, and the ads everywhere else on the site go purely to Twitch, and not the streamers, so they will still be present.

That’s all for today. Tune in tomorrow for another news before the weekend hits. Otherwise, have a great day!

Wednesday 8-22-18: D.Va’s Animated Short, Vive Wireless Adapter Release, and Gabe Newell’s Dota 2 Voice Pack

News! Read it!

  • Vive Wireless Adapter Release Date
  • D.Va’s Shooting Star Overwatch Video
  • The Dota 2 Gabe Newell Announcer Pack

Vive’s Wireless Adapter

According to a recent post on the Vive blog, the Wireless Adapter for the HTC Vive will release publicly on September 24, with preorders opening up on September 5. The standard version costs $299, while the Pro version costs $359. As the name implies, this is Valve’s official method of eliminating cables in the virtual reality process. It’s noted that you need a free PCI-e slot to install the receiver card. I wish I could afford one.

Shooting Star

Blizzard released a new animated short, featuring modern-day D.Va. She’s the leader of a protective task force for the Korean city of Busan. I won’t go into detail about it, just watch for yourself.

Also, Busan will be a new control map in Overwatch, based in the city from the short.

Gabe Newell Dota Announcer Pack

Valve founder Gabe Newell is now a Mega Kill pack available in Dota 2. The catch? He’s only available to those subscribed to Dota +, their monthly subscription service for aiding player improvement. It was announced via this entertaining video of Newell in the recording room.

That’s all for today, folks, thanks for reading! Tune in tomorrow for more news relating to video games! Otherwise, have a great day.

Tuesday 8-21-18: Hat in Time DLC/Co-op/Switch Port, Sekiro’s Release Date, Twitch Prime Ad Changes, Life is Strange 2 Reveal Trailer

It’s a heavy news day! Lots to discuss. So here’s a rare, four-topic news post. Forgive me if they’re small segments.

  • A Hat in Time DLC, Co-op, Switch Port
  • FROM’s Sekiro’s Release Date
  • Twitch Prime Ad Changes
  • Life is Strange 2 Reveal Trailer

Two Hats in Time

Remember A Hat In Time, the adorable 3D platformer released not long ago? Developers Gears for Breakfast recently released an announcement trailer detailing their upcoming DLC. Titled “Seal the Deal,” it features a cruise ship run by adorable seals. They also announce a new game mode called Death Wish, which is like an extra difficult boss mode. They then announce a new co-op update is coming to the PC game on September 13. Lastly, they announce a Nintendo Switch version of the game, which will be “coming soon.” Perhaps we’ll have to make a Cozy Co-op episode about a Hat in Time soon.

Sekiro Release Date

According to a tweet by the game’s official Twitter, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice has a release date! March 22 of next year. Originally in Japanese, the tweet roughly translates to the following.

‘”Sekiro: SHADOWS DIE TWICE” will be released simultaneously worldwide on Friday, March 22, 2019. I hope you’ll enjoy it.’

So hey, that’s cool. It’s not too far away when you think about it.

Twitch Prime, Now with Ads

When Amazon bought out Twitch, the popular live streaming service, they implemented a new special status called Twitch Prime. This was a free upgrade to Twitch users who also had Amazon Prime. It offered the same benefits as Twitch Turbo, an alternate upgrade service.

One of the features of Twitch Prime was ad-free viewing. There are quite a few ads on Twitch, so having a way to mitigate them without an ad blocker was quite appealing. Now Twitch has announced that Twitch Prime will no longer offer ad-free viewing, starting next month. Twitch Turbo will continue to offer the service, however. So those wanting ad-free viewing will have to add another nine dollars a month.

Frustrating, to say the least.

Life is Strange 2

At long last, we have a trailer for Life is Strange 2. Instead of me talking about it, since I don’t have much to say, how about I just post the video below?

That’s all for today, tune in tomorrow for more fun, flirty news. Otherwise, have a great day!

Monday 8-20-18: Dying Light Battle Royale and God of War Egypt

A new week, a new news post. Here’s the news.

  • Dying Light’s Battle Royale Early Access
  • God of War Egypt Concept Art

Dying Light: Bad Blood

A few months ago, developer Techland announced that their open-world, parkour RPG Dying Light would be getting their own Battle Royale game. Now we know when. A number of private invitations for an early access playtest will go out on August 22, offering the chance to play on 9 AM August 25 to 9 PM August 26. Shortly after this will be a global test launch for all players that signed up (sign-ups are closed now, sorry). When the game launches into a public early access, availability will be limited to those who purchase their $20 founders pack, but the game will transition into free to play for the formal launch.

God of War Egypt Concept Art

Game director Cory Barlog recently revealed some concept art they had for God of War in Egyptian lore at Devcon. That’s it, really. You can see the concept art above, courtesy of Gearnuke.

Bit of a slow news day, sorry y’all. Tune in tomorrow for another news post. Otherwise, have a great day!
