Obsidian Entertainment RPG

Obsidian Entertainment to Reveal a New Game at the Game Awards

Obsidian Entertainment plans on announcing a new game next week, during the Game Awards. It looks like a retro-futuristic one, too.

If you visit the Obsidian Entertainment website, you’ll be greeted by a pop-up advertisement for one of two companies/products. It displayed a countdown leading up to the time of the Game Awards show and a skip button. Pressing the skip button will direct you to another ad for the same product before bringing you to the actual website. One product was Auntie Cleo’s, which appears to be a skin cream, I guess? I’m not sure. The other was for Spacer’s Choice, which looks to be an ad for a space farer’s firearm.

Right now, we don’t know squat about the game itself. Spacer’s Choice implies that there will be space, and also shooting, but that hardly narrows things down. We will presumably get more information during the Game Awards.

The game will be published by Take-Two Interactive’s Private Division, a new publication branch with a focus on the developers (I’m not sure what that means). This will be the second title published by the branch, with Kerbal Space Program being the first.

This takes place not long after Microsoft announced their acquisition of Obsidian Entertainment. Microsoft was clear at the time that they have no intention of interfering with the developer’s plans or ideas, but they were happy to have them under their umbrella all the same.

I spoke previously about Alien: Blackout, a game rumored to be announced at the Game Awards. But we won’t know any more about that, or this, until the actual broadcast next week. For more details on that, check out the official Game Awards website.

Fallout 76 Updates Bethesda

Bethesda Details Next Two Fallout 76 Updates After Silence

After a bit of silence. developer Bethesda details the next two Fallout 76 updates before releasing a formal patch list.

You undoubtedly have seen the negative reception to Fallout 76, mostly with the slew of bugs and glitches the game has. It’s understandable to be upset. It was even more upsetting that Bethesda had been either non-committal or just straight up silent about the issues since.

Now, in a Reddit post, the Bethesda community manager spoke out to Fallout fans, apologizing for not being more considerate to the community and detailing the game’s next two updates.

We’re aiming to get you the patch notes for these updates quicker and will have them available for December 4th’s update later this week. Probably Thursday or Friday. We’d like to make these articles weekly to make sure you know what the studio is working on as it relates to issues you may be experiencing, quality of life requests you have, or new features they’re excited to share.

The first patch will come on December 4, Tuesday. This will be followed by another patch on December 11, also a Tuesday. But what exactly are they fixing in these patches? I’ve got that listed below.

December 4, 2018

  • Increased Stash Limit to 600. Small improvement for now, to see if change doesn’t negatively affect game performance.
  • Bosses will reliably drop intended loot.
  • Cryolator will cause Chilled, Frosted, and Frozen effects on players, depending on how many times they get hit. The effect lasts 30 seconds.
  • Fixed bug preventing over-encumbered deaths to not allow respawning.
  • Fixed a bug where people were stuck in their power armor. Can still sometimes occur, however.

December 11, 2018

  • Push-to-talk for PC.
  • 21:9 resolution support for PC. Still no 4:5 support. Not that I’m bitter or anything.
  • Field of View settings for PC.
  • SPECIAL RESPEC. After level 50, players can choose between card packs or re-allocating a special stat.
  • CAMP overlap. Your camp won’t be removed/stored if you log into a place that already had one in your spot. Instead, you’ll be notified of the overlap, and offered a chance to join a different server instead. If you agree for the overlap, moving your camp will be free.
  • Bulldozer. You can scrap small trees, rocks, and other crap in your CAMP using the bulldozer, for easier, cleaner camp construction.

Also, do you like the header image? I’ve been having a lot of fun with the game’s camera

Shirley Curry skyrim petition

Fans Petition that Shirley Curry be Immortalized in Elder Scrolls 6

Fans are petitioning for Shirley Curry, the elderly YouTube Letsplayer, to be immortalized in Elder Scrolls 6 by Bethesda.

Shirley Curry is an 82-year-old gamer with a decent sized following on YouTube. She’s best known for her Skyrim playthrough, spanning over 300 episodes at this point. Her gentle demeanor and wholesome outlook cultivated an even more gentle and wholesome community.

Curry had recently commented on a video regarding Elder Scrolls 6’s release date, remarking on how her age may not let her play it in time.

“I guess that puts the nail in my coffin. When Skyrim 6 comes out I’ll be 88! So I probably won’t get to play it.”

Once her followers, which she calls her grandkids, recuperated from an overly swelled heart, they got to work on a petition to Bethesda. Their goal: get the game studio to honor Curry in the next Elder Scrolls game. The petition is currently on Change.org, with 2,525 signatures at the time of writing this.

The idea of creating homage NPCs is nothing new to Bethesda. Erik the Slayer, a Skyrim NPC, is in reference to Erik West, who visited the studio before passing away from cancer in 2011. They also made Evan, who would connect with their brother through Fallout before passing from diabetes-related illness, as an NPC in Fallout 4’s Nuka Worlds DLC.

In the meantime, Reddit user phantom-scribbler is putting together a Skyrim mod that would make Curry into a follower. Curry has given the green light to the idea, and a modder has already been sourced. They need audio samples to pull from, however. So if you’re a fan of Curry’s video, feel free to suggest a moment to them.

Bethesda has not responded to the idea at this time. Till then, check out her very first episode of Skyrim, embedded below. She has also been playing the new Call of Cthulhu, which has my interest.

Alien Blackout Game

What We Know About Alien: Blackout Right Now

Have you heard about Alien: Blackout? Not sure what it is? Don’t feel bad. No one is sure about what it is. But here’s what I know so far.

Not long ago, 20th Century Fox submitted a new trademark for a game called Alien: Blackout. The trademark included physical discs, digital copies, and an online service of some sort. The phrasing seems to imply a multiplayer server type scenario, but I could be misinterpreting.

A bit later, two Twitter accounts were discovered bearing the same name. One had an underscore separating the name. Both accounts are currently hidden, with the FOXNEXT logo in place of a profile image.

The most recent bit of speculation fuel is a tweet by Geoff Keighley, the founder and organizer of the Game Awards. This tweet had an image of the phrase “WORLDS WILL CHANGE” repeating over and over. The font bears a strong resemblance to that used in the Alien franchise. The caption for the tweet claims that the worlds will change on December 6, the same day as the Game Awards broadcast.

So if I had to guess, I’d say that a new Alien game will be revealed at the award show. But I could be wrong. The show begins at 8:30 PM Eastern Time on December 6 (Thursday). Check out their How to Watch page for more information on how to watch. You can also participate in the voting process before the show airs.

Warframe Switch Nintendo Port

Warframe is Now on Nintendo Switch, Giving Free Items

Warframe is now available on Nintendo Switch. The free, sci-fi third-person shooter that rocked the house on PC and PS4 has finally come to the portable console.

The port was announced back in July, I think? Whenever TennoCon, the Warframe convention, was held. Developer Digital Extremes announced that Panic Button was handling the port.

With the release of Warframe on Switch, they also announced a special item pack for newcomers to the console. Available via the Comms Segment after the first mission, the item pack will no longer be available after December 4. It contains the following items.

  • 50,000 Credits (main game currency)
  • 3-Day Affinity Booster (an EXP boost)
  • Orokin Reactor (doubles Warframe mod capacity)
  • Orokin Catalyst (doubles weapon mod capacity)
  • Forma (resets item affinity in exchange for a polarized mod slot)

PC players will be able to import their account save data onto the Switch. This can only be done once, cross-platform saving is not available. PS4 and Xbox One players will not be able to do this.

Digital Extremes recommends checking out their Switch FAQ page with any console specific questions, and the official Warframe Wiki for game information.

Fortnite Stolen Dance Rapper

Rapper 2 Milly Speaks Out Over Stolen Dance Move in Fortnite

Epic is under scrutiny again as rapper 2 Milly speaks out about how his signature dance move was stolen/added to Fortnite without his consent.

In season 5 of Fortnite, they added a new emote called Swipe It. Interestingly, this dance bears a strong resemblance to a move called the Milly Rock, seen in the music video of a song with the same name. The song and dance were created by rapper 2 Milly. After hearing about the stolen dance move, Milly spoke to CBS news about how he’s wanting to get proper recognition.

“Everybody was just like, ‘Yo, your dance is in the game. They actually sell that particular move. It’s for purchase. That’s when I really was like … oh nah, this can’t go on too long.
. . .
I don’t even want to bash them for all the millions. Know what I am saying? It’s not really like that. I just feel like I have to protect what’s mine.”

Milly has been trying to contact Epic about the issue. If not for compensation, then he wants to at least “put the actual rap songs behind the dances that make so much money as Emotes.”

This has brought into question how one protects a dance move as an intellectual property. the US Copyright Office considered dance moves a form of creative expression, and won’t accept copyright patents for them. So you can’t protect choreographic works the same way as music or lyrics.

Epic has a history with dance emote drama. One was regarding a dance-off contest they held. A more recent event was regarding the implementation of “jiggle physics” to the boobs of female characters with certain dances.

Epic has not commented on the situation at this time.

Black Mesa Xen Half Life

Black Mesa Project Teases Final Area: The Xen

The popular Half-Life Fan Remake, Black Mesa, is finally releasing the last zone in the game: The Xen. Well, they released a teaser, at least.

If you’re a fan of Half-Life, you probably have heard about Black Mesa. It began as a mod for the Source 2 engine, porting the 1998 first-person shooter Half-Life into a more modern format. The project gained popularity and was eventually accepted by Valve themselves, releasing as its own game on Steam in 2015 under Crowbar Interactive.

The game has been in active development since. One of the most notable missing features was the existence of the final world, the Xen. Instead, the game ended right at the moment of teleportation to the alien environment.

Now the developers have released a new teaser trailer dedicated to their implementation of the Xen.

The reveal was in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the original Half-Life’s release, November 19, 1998. Before this, the developers had only shown concept art for the Xen. They also note that the area isn’t ready yet, but they’re targeting for a release in Q2 of 2019.

You can find it for $20 on Steam now, if you don’t want to wait. I’m just glad to finally see the giant testicle crab in HD.

Crackdown 3 Release Date Wrecking Crew

Crackdown 3 Release Date Announced for the Last Time, Probably

Crackdown 3 has another release date. Assuming this is the last one, it’s expected to come out on February 15, 2019.

Xbox hosted X018 recently, a big promotional event for Xbox content. In it, they release more details regarding the upcoming open-world action game. This included a release date, Xbox program inclusions, releasing the first game for free, and a gameplay trailer of their competitive multiplayer mode.

Crackdown 3 release date: February 15, 2019.

This is I think the fourth time they’ve announced a release date for the game. It was originally expected to release in late 2016 but was then delayed to spring 2017, then one other time I can’t recollect, and now February.

Crackdown 3 will also be a part of both the Xbox Play Anywhere and the Xbox Game Pass program. This means it’ll be available to Game Pass subscribers on Launch, and those who can play the game will be able to play on Xbox One and PC, even if they only own one copy of the game..

To further promote the occasion, Microsoft has announced that the original Crackdown, the one for the Xbox 360 in 2007, will be available on Xbox One through backward compatibility for free. It’ll also come with some additional technical support for Xbox One X, supporting 4K resolution.

And lastly is Wrecking Zone, their multiplayer game mode. They released a new trailer for the mode, giving us a closer look at what it’ll actually be like. The entire map is destructible, I guess? They talked a big game about how they use the Azure cloud computing service to process all the complicated physics involved. As cool as it seems, that just makes me wonder how long it’ll be before that feature is shut down when player interest drops.

Forgive me for irregular or imperfect news posts here for the next few days. I’m out-of-state, visiting family, and it’s hard to find the spare time to get writing done. Also, this laptop isn’t the best. I spilled Coke on it a while back and now the keyboard is a bit wonky (don’t judge me).

Sims 4 First person mode perspective

Sims 4 Will Add a First Person Mode Soon

The Sims 4 will soon feature a first person perspective option for users to enjoy, and get motion sick to.

The feature was revealed during the most recent Maxis Monthly, a live stream for promoting Sims games and content. Hosted by community manager Kate and build engineer Steve Lansing, the stream is a solid 30 minutes of messing around in the new mode as their sim roams with high free will.

Watch Maxis Monthly Nov 2018 from TheSims on www.twitch.tv

The first person mode will be available in a free update launching later this month. Entirely optional, players can enter the view mode by pressing Shift+Tab.

The first person patch, which will also come with a new career track and more terrain modification tools, will release on November 13 at 1 PM ET at no cost.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate Game and Watch Racist Native American

Super Smash Bros to Remove Native American Portrayal

Nintendo was accidentally racist recently when people discovered that a character in Super Smash Bros Ultimate depicted a Native American.

In a recent live stream, showing off gameplay of the upcoming Smash Bros game, viewers noticed that the “Side Smash” attack done by Mr Game and Watch was stylized like a Native American attacking with fire. While the intention was to reference an old game the character originated from, the gaming community found this far less savory than the company expected.

To be specific, the fighter was posing after Fire Attack, and LCD screen game from 1982 for the Game and Watch handheld. In the game, the player controls a cowboy that has to defend their wooden fort by Native Americans attacking with firey torches.

In the Smash Bros attack, the character bore a feather headdress, cementing the reference to the culture.

You can probably see why showcasing Native Americans as a violent tribal character could be seen as offensive. Once this was made aware via social media, Nintendo responded (via Eurogamer), apologizing and promising to remove the headdress.

“Nintendo has been planning to distribute an update for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate that removes the feather from the silhouette of Mr. Game & Watch. The original game on which this depiction of the character is based was released more than three decades ago and does not represent our company values today.

We sincerely apologise that this change was not noticed in our marketing material and are continuing our work to make Super Smash Bros. Ultimate an experience that is both welcoming and fun for everyone.”

The 80’s were a bit of a racist time. I can see how it’s hard to reference classic characters without occasionally embodying their unsavory views of the time. It’s cool that Nintendo was so polite and professional about the issue.

pubg Suicide Squad Joker Harley

Suicide Squad Joker and Harley to Become Skins in PUBG

Suicide Squad is getting some representation in the Battle Royale genre. Players can soon wear Joker and Harley Quinn skins in their PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds games.

No, seriously, this is a new thing happening at the end of 2018. You’ve not accidentally clicked an article from 2016. You’ve not been magically whisked away to when Obama was president, American Idol was still airing new shows, and the Star Wars sequels only just began.

According to a new trailer by developer PUBG Corp., the antagonistic pair will be coming to the game in the form of playable skins. The trailer shows off some gameplay by the characters, and nothing more. No details regarding when it’ll be made available or whether it’ll cost anything. This will presumably be made clear sooner to its release.

I get that the heart of all promotional content is to encourage greater exposure to a brand, but the film came out two years ago. The supposed sequel isn’t scheduled until at least 2020. Why are they doing this now?

Deltarune Toby Fox

Toby Fox to Build a Dev Team for Deltarune

Now that Deltarune is out and everyone had a chance to play it, creator Toby Fox has talked in greater detail about his plans for the game. And how in its current scope, it’ll be impossible to finish by himself.

Fox released a Twitlonger post recently, talking about his plans for the future game. The biggest bit of information about this is that he believes the game is too ambitious to do alone.

“Given the length of the rest of the game, and how long I’d be willing to spend on a project (7 years maximum) I think the answer is that it’s actually impossible to make this game.
. . .
So I’m going to try making a team. Because I really want to make this. But I may not be able to succeed because I have no experience successfully directing a team and I have no idea who I’m going to work with.
. . .
Since I haven’t started assembling the team yet I have absolutely no estimation of its completion. It could take up to 999 years depending on the efficiency level.”

It’s not too clear how many people, nor who, Fox is looking for.

Toby Fox has also stated that there will NOT be a Kickstarter for Deltarune. He says that this is because he’s still struggling with meeting the backer rewards for Undertale.
