First published in the October 1937 issue of Weird Tales, it follows the story of a strange home that instills sickness and death in all who live there.
The characters share the name “Whipple” with that of Lovecraft’s own grandfather, Whipple Phillips.
While 250 copies of the story were printed 1928, the sheets remained unbound. Eventually, about 150 of those copies made their way to Arkham House, most were sold in their unbound state. It remained this way until 1961 when the remaining 100 were bound but unjacketed. A genuine copy of these bound books is one of the rarest pieces of Lovecraft’s work there is, making it a “holy grail” to collectors.
The audio is provided by LibriVox, an acoustical liberation of books in the public domain. It is part of a “Seven HP Lovecraft Stories compilation, all coordinated and narrated by Phil Chenevert.
