Suicide Squad Joker and Harley to Become Skins in PUBG

Suicide Squad is getting some representation in the Battle Royale genre. Players can soon wear Joker and Harley Quinn skins in their PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds games.

No, seriously, this is a new thing happening at the end of 2018. You’ve not accidentally clicked an article from 2016. You’ve not been magically whisked away to when Obama was president, American Idol was still airing new shows, and the Star Wars sequels only just began.

According to a new trailer by developer PUBG Corp., the antagonistic pair will be coming to the game in the form of playable skins. The trailer shows off some gameplay by the characters, and nothing more. No details regarding when it’ll be made available or whether it’ll cost anything. This will presumably be made clear sooner to its release.

I get that the heart of all promotional content is to encourage greater exposure to a brand, but the film came out two years ago. The supposed sequel isn’t scheduled until at least 2020. Why are they doing this now?

Thursday 7-26-18: PUBG isn’t eSports Ready, Denuvo Hacker Voksi Arrested, and Hellblade VR

I woke up early today. So you get the news early today! Here is that news.

  • PUBG Isn’t Ready for eSports
  • Game Hacker Voksi Arrested in Denuvo Investigation
  • Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice Coming to VR

PUBG eSports Infancy

Some of you may know that PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds recently launched the PUBG Global Invitational. Despite this, creator Brandon Greene stated that “we’re not esports ready, and we’ve never said we’re esports ready.” Greene believes that Battle Royale eSports is a new idea and need some experimentation to figure out. Greene wants to, in order to make the game more ready for competitive play, focus on resolving bugs and implementing quality-of-life changes that the players want.

Voksi’s Arrest

Controversial anti-piracy software firm Denuvo has recently taken legal action against established hacker Voksi. The hacker has a history of disabling the Denuvo software present in many modern games. While Denuvo claims they were arrested by the Belgium Cybercrime unit, Voksi stated on Reddit that they turned themselves in voluntarily to the police and have contacted Denuvo for a peaceful resolution. I understand protecting your product and livelihood, but this only bothers me more. Denuvo is frequently the suspected cause of performance issues and connectivity problems pertaining to games that use its anti-tampering software. I don’t promote piracy, but I’m actively against Denuvo specifically.

Hellblade in VR

According to an announcement video Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice will be coming to VR Oculus Rift and HTC Vive on July 31. This is a free game for anyone who owns or purchases the normal game on Steam. They recommend a GTX 1080 graphics card. This is an interesting one to report on. Hellblade is a fantastic game that handles mental illness better than nearly all others in the game industry. It’s a very good looking game too. But what will VR add to this? Developer Ninja Theory says they did this out of curiosity, which I can’t blame them for. But I’ve always felt that if you’re to have VR, it needs to add to the game. Given the third person perspective, the only thing VR could add was the “wow” factor from seeing the world you’re in. Of course, I can’t know if they’ve achieved that without playing it myself. All things considered, I approve.

Friday 7-20-18: Breath of the Wild in Mario Kart, Offensive PUBG Items, and Gravity Rush 2 Servers

I’m still itching to watch Jurassic Park. Probably because I’ve been watching letsplays of that Jurassic World game. Here’s the news.

  • Breath of the Wild in Mario Kart
  • PUBG Devs Apologize for Offensive WWII Items
  • Gravity Rush 2 Servers are Gone

Zelda Kart

Did you think Nintendo was done with Mario Kart 8? WELL YOU’RE WRONG. The game company has recently announced the version 1.6.0 patch for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the Switch. This update adds Link, in the Champion’s Clothes, as seen in the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It also adds in the Master Cycle Zero, a horse-like motorcycle originally added to Breath of the Wild as DLC. They must really like Link being in Mario Kart.

Offensive PUBG Items

Popular Battle Royale game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has stirred the pot of tact recently with two particular World War 2 references. If you like in an English speaking country, you may not have fully understood what they were or why, but those in China, Japan, and Korea are reasonably upset. The first item was a pilot’s mask that donning a rising sun symbol, which hits a bit too close to the controversy of kamikazes. The other was an AI bot name, “Unit 731.” This designation was given to a Japanese military arm that conducted experiments on prisoners of war from China, Korea, and Russia. They also developed chemical weapons. Developers Bluehole has since removed the items and apologized for their ignorance.

Gravity Rush 2 Servers

As I’ve warned about in the past, the online servers for Gravity Rush 2 have finally been shut down. Various online features like treasure hunts and picture ratings are now disabled, so to speak. Sorry GR2 fans, it was a long time coming.

That’s all for today. Tune in Monday for the next post of news. I’ll be out of town this weekend, not that it matters to y’all. Otherwise, have a great weekend!

Tuesday 5-29-18: PUBG Sues Fortnite, Denuvo Vampyr, Battlepacks 5

It’s been a long week, and it’s only Tuesday. Here’s the news.

  • PUBG Sues Fortnite
  • Vampyr is Denuvo Free
  • Battlefield 5 Says “No More Battlepacks”

Legal Royale

The Korean Times recently reported that PUBG Corp., a division of Korean developer Bluehole, filed an injunction, alleging copyright infringement, with the Seoul Central District Court against Epic Games Korea over the similarities between PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite: Battle Royale. PUBG has a tendency to be sue-happy, and Fortnite is one of many, many battle royale games. To me, this seems like a greater stretch than they can hope for.

Denuvo Slayer

The highly anticipated RPG by the developers of Life is Strange is growing ever closer to launch. When asked about whether the game uses Denuvo, an infamous DRM software installation, the Vampyr Twitter responded confirming that they will not be. This is good to hear.

Battlepacks

There’s been talk going around about how Battlefield 5 says it won’t have randomized loot boxes. Given the history of EA, many people, myself included, don’t trust them. When questioned, the Battlefield Twitter stated that “There are no more Battlepacks. Instead, players will be able to choose their rewards directly or through rank up events.” While I’m happy the loot box idea is being forgotten, I remain cautious just the same.

Friday 5-25-18: TotalBiscuit’s Passing, Steam Link Mobile, and Miramar on Xbox One

Been a rough week, adjusting to post-vacation time. Here’s the news.

  • TotalBiscuit has Passed
  • Steam Link on Mobile
  • Miramar is on Xbox One

TotalBiscuit

John Bain, best known by his internet handle TotalBiscuit/Cynical Brit, has passed away at the age of 33 due to cancer. The game critic had been publicly struggling with the affliction since 2014. In his time, he would establish himself as one of the most popular curators of video games. My sympathies go out to those affected by his passing.

Steam Link Mobile Drama

Steam Link, the feature that allows users to play their Steam games from their TV, has made its way to mobile. Though not without a bit of drama. The official Steam Link iOS app was initially accepted by Apple on May 7. Steam announced the app on May 9. The next day, the app was then rejected by Apple for “business conflicts with app guidelines not initially seen in the first review.” So now the iOS version of Steam Link is canceled. Inversely, Steam Link for Android has released already and is usable now. I tried it out for a bit. It suggests not using a PS4 controller, as it’s unresponsive, so I cannot say how good the app itself is. Though it seems to do fairly well.

Miramar on Xbox One

The second map of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has finally made its way to the Xbox One. This desert-based map features a number of Spanish names and arid landscapes. All the while, the PC version of the game is close to getting their third map, a tropical and cavernous play area.

That’s all for today, thanks for reading. Tune in Monday for the weekend wrap up. Also! the Dark Souls episode of the Cozy Co-op has released. Give it a listen. Otherwise, have a great night!

Monday 4-30-18: Data Mining in Mario and Kirby, and PUBG Hack Devs Arrested

It seems today is hacker/data miner day. At least all our news seems to think so. Here is that news.

  • Data Miner Reveals Upcoming Super Mario Odyssey Costumes
  • Data Miner Discovers Upcoming Kirby: Star Allies Friends
  • PUBG Hack Developers Sued for Malware Injection

Super Mario Odyssey Costumes

Since it’s release last holiday season, Super Mario Odyssey has received regular yet infrequent updates. While some are more extensive, such as Luigi’s balloon world, this one is simply more costumes. These costumes aren’t available yet though, data miners have simply found their reference images within the game’s code and files. They are as follows.

  • Zombie Outfit
  • Conductor Outfit (the musical kind)
  • Racing Outfit
  • Santa Outfit
  • Broodals Outfits (three of them)
Kirby: Star Allies Data Mine

The cute Kirby game launched last month, and Nintendo promised regular updates to the game that will add new friends you can play with. A data miner has discovered just which friends those will be. They are coded in waves. the second wave contains Adeleine, Daroach, and Dark Meta Knight, while the third wave will be Magolor, Taranza, Susie, and the Jambastion Mages. No word on when they’ll arrive, however.

Sueing PUBG Hack Devs

It’s no secret that PUBG Corp. likes to take legal action against whatever they can. Though this has been for the greater good, this time. Fifteen hack developers were arrested and fined a total of $5.1 million for injecting a Trojan virus into their PUBG hacking software. This isn’t the first time hacking software came with some sketchy side code, and it won’t be the last.

Friday 4-20-18

It’s been quite the week. Also lol the weed number. More on that later, here’s the news.

  • High School eSports Sans Shooters
  • PUBG Map Selector
  • The Fractured But Whole on Switch

New Kind of School Jocks

The National Federation of State High Schools has a number of responsibilities regarding high school regulations around the country. One of those responsibilities includes regulated school sports. The NFSH has recently announced that they’re working towards including eSports into the system. They recognize that around 70 percent of students identify as gamers, and want to include that. The NFHS partnered with a startup called PlayVS to build the digital infrastructure needed to support high school esports. Soon, students will be able to compete in official state championship competitions and be recognized by their state athletic associations. Next up, scholarships.

PUBG Map Selector

Not long ago, PUBG Corp announced that yet another new, tropical map is in the works. This one would allegedly have large caverns to explore and compete in. Being the third map option for the popular battle royale game, the developers have also stated that a map selection menu will be implemented. You will be able to toggle which maps you want to be randomly placed into while avoiding the ones you don’t want. Unfortunately, the Xbox One version of the game won’t get the second map, Miramar, until May.

Switched But Whole

This is news that probably wouldn’t merit a full post, but I’m wanting to report three things a day. So this is filler. South Park: The Fractured But Whole, the sequel RPG to the popular satirical cartoon, will its way onto the Nintendo Switch eShop. For a full $59.99, you will be able to download the standard edition (meaning no DLC). It releases on the eShop on April 24.

We have a new episode of The Cozy Co-op out today! It’s about To the Moon, check it out. That’s it for this week, check back Monday for a nice weekend wrap up post. Otherwise, have a great weekend!

Wednesday 1-3-18: PUBG Plagiarism, Monster Hunter PC, and LawBreakers Blamed PUBG

Wednesday. Have I made a joke about how NES is in the middle of Wednesday? A joke as old as the NES is itself. Here’s the news.

  • Microsoft takes down the plagiarized advertisement
  • Monster Hunter: World on PC gets a release window, kinda
  • LawBreaker’s publisher blames PUBG on its failure

Plagiarized PUBG Ad

A few months ago, Reddit user macsterr created a concept for PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds on Xbox One (on the left). This ad was a player standing in a field growing out of the top of the console. A while after that, Microsoft posted a very similar ad (on the right) on their Twitter. Macsterr called them out about it, and now they’ve taken the ad down. Xbox frontman Major Nelson apologized for the situation and has said he is contacting macsterr. someone got fired, for sure.

Monster Hunter: World on PC

The Monster Hunter Twitter posted a video of producer Ryozo Tsujimoto thanking everyone for their support and feedback, and telling us that after the console release on January 26, free updates will happen that will contain new monsters. He also tells us that the estimates time for the PC port is “Autumn 2018.” Buckle up PC gamers, you got a while still.

PUBG is why LawBreakers Failed

Oh boy, do I have opinions here. LawBreakers released earlier this year, and it was met with an extremely mild reception. Turns out the world didn’t need another hero shooter, especially one that felt overly edgy and otherwise bland. When investors asked the publisher in a Q3 conference call why something they funded did so poorly, financial executive Shiro Uemura was there to shine some light.

“Our results in North America in the third quarter were below our outlook, mainly due to the sales from LawBreakers being below our expectations. LawBreakers is a unique FPS developed for core users. We had very high expectations for its launch; however, the timing of its launch turned out to be unfortunate, specifically the blockbuster PC online game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds came out right about the same time, making the market environment very tough for first-person shooters in general and for LawBreakers.”

… Seriously? PUBG isn’t even the same genre as LawBreakers, not to mention it came out months before that did. Nor does this explain LawBreakers’ poor console sales, which PUBG wasn’t available on at the time. Overwatch is years old, and it has more reasoning to have hindered this game than PUBG would. The problem was that it was a boring and poorly balanced game. Boy got me heated over this bogusness.

Saltiness aside, today was a nice news day. I’m trying out having pictures with each topic, let me know if its a good of bad change. I’m using a phone app called LifeRPG to try and keep myself more organized, so I should be better about consistency. I’m thinking about writing an article about these kinds of apps. I digress. Be sure to check back tomorrow for more of the worthwhile content that is video game news. Otherwise, have a great night!

Thursday 12-7-17: PUBG Maps, Portal Games, Steam’s Bitcoin, and Ryan Reynolds

Thursday! I forgot Wednesday. I’m sorry, I guess its been a rough week. here are the last 2 days of gaming:

  • New PlayerUnknown’s Battleground map
  • New Portal game??
  • Steam drops Bitcoin
  • Ryan Reynolds is Detective Pikachu

PUBG Map
Developers Bluehole has finally released the newest map to the hit battle royale game, Miramar. This desert based map has been in the works for a while now and has been known about for nearly just as long. Despite its contrast to the grassy plains of the original map, Miramar looks to be full of interesting places, all with Spanish names.

Bridge Constructor Portal
Here’s a release no one expected, or asked for really. Valve has announced that in partnership with Headsup Games, they will be releasing a new Portal-themed physics puzzle game called Bridge Constructor Portal. As you guessed, it’s like Bridge Constructor, but with Portals. Many fans are upset at the emotional damage they suffered from getting excited about another Portal game. Regardless of how you feel, you can get this game on December 20 for PC and mobile, with a console version coming next year. You can watch the reveal trailer for it here.

Steam removed Bitcoin
The largest digital game storefront has decided to remove functionality for the largest cryptocurrency. They state the reason is that the currency is simply too volatile, and transactions are becoming too expensive, for it to be a viable transaction option. Its hard to argue with that, considering Bitcoin fees have reached upwards of 20 dollars. Now if you want to buy Steam games, you have to do it the normal way to us plebs.

Ryan Reynolds is Detective Pikachu
It was recently announced that renowned actor, Ryan Reynolds, will be taking the role of Detective Pikachu in the upcoming live-action movie of the same name. This M-Night Shammy level twist sounded like a dream when I first read about it, but it’s as real as it gets. Some fans are upset about Danny Devito not getting the role, a meme that had popularized back when the Detective Pikachu game had released in Japan.

That’s all we have for today, and how bizarre it all is. Check back tomorrow for the last day of this weeks news. Otherwise, have a great night!

Tuesday 11-28-17: Ports for A Hat in Time, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, and Yooka-Laylee

I think I made the “Tuesday News Day” joke last week, so I should probably refrain from that this week. Today’s news is all port based, weirdly enough.

  • A Hat in Time comes to consoles
  • PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Mobile Version
  • Yooka-Laylee coming to the Switch

A Hat in Time on Consoles
The adorable platformer released not long ago on PC and Mac. During this time it received amazing reviews. Developers Gears for Breakfast have announced that it will soon be releasing on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, specifically on December 4 (that’s about a week away). The game will cost $30. You can see the trailer announcing this HERE.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Mobile Version
You heard(read?) right! A big name Chinese game publisher who has been in workings with developers Bluehole about a Chinese version of the game have recently announced that China will also be getting a mobile phone version of the game. No details have been given, or even if this version will come to the States. Stay tuned for more on that.

Yooka-Laylee coming to the Switch
This spiritual successor to the Banjo-Kazooie games announced a while back that they would be coming to Switch in the future. That future is about 3 weeks from now, on December 14. The game generated some controversy when popular YouTuber, JonTron, was originally a voice actor for the game. Until he made some racist remarks online and had his lines later patched out. The game had mixed reviews overall, unfortunately, and now that the hype of release has died down, I doubt the Switch version will do much better. Regardless you can get Yooka-Laylee for Nintendo Switch on December 14 for $39.99.

So many port announcements. December will be a repetitive month. Thanks for reading everyone. Be sure to check back tomorrow for the latest and greatest in video game news. Otherwise, have a great night!
