Tuesday 10-9-18: Guacamelee on Switch, Borderlands 2 VR, and Pikachu’s New Hat

What a better day than a Tuesday to announce some game stuff. Why? Don’t ask me. Here’s that news.

  • Guacamelee is Coming to Nintendo Switch
  • Borderlands 2 gets PSVR Treatment
  • Pikachu Wears a Douchey Hat

Guacamelee on Switch

According to developers Drinkbox Studios, the luchador style platformer (Metroidvania, I suppose) will be coming to the Nintendo Switch. The first game is actually available now in the Nintendo eShop, with the sequel to be made available later this year. If you’re a fan of the genre, and of Mexican food, I recommend taking a look.

Borderlands 2 VR

Gearbox has announced plans for a PlayStation VR adaption of their hit shooter from 2012, Borderlands 2. The game will feature standard VR controls, as well as a new BAMF mode, which temporarily slows time for everyone but the player. The VR adaptions will not support multiplayer, however. It releases on December 14 for $49.99. It’s a bit steep if you ask me. But Skyrim did the same thing, I suppose.

If it cost $30, I’d have been much more inclined to get it.

Pikachu’s new hat

Do you ever look at your Pokemon and wonder what it’d be like if they smoked JUULs and didn’t tip their waitress? Don’t worry! There’s a Pikachu for you. A new outfitted variation of the electric mouse has appeared in Pokemon GO recently, sporting a new, tilted cap. Players will also discover a new selection of clothing items for their avatars, also sporting the same thunderbolt logo.

Apparently, this is part of a collaboration between clothing company Fragment. Dubbed “Thunderbolt Project,” the company is releasing a line of real life, Pokemon-themed clothing some time next year. To promote the crossover, players can get these items in their game.

That’s all for today, folks. Thanks for tuning in. Come back tomorrow for another news post thing of the news. Yes. Otherwise, have a great day!

Thursday 6-21-18: No Xbox VR, Street Fighter Loot Boxes, and Pokemon Go Assault Case

I didn’t do news again. It’s been a lethargic week, honestly. But not today! Here’s the news.

  • Microsoft Moves Away from Xbox VR
  • Street Fighter 5 Gets Lootboxes
  • Men Beat up Another Over Pokemon Go

No Xbox VR

According to an interview with Gamesindustry.biz, Microsoft’s chief marketing officer of gaming Mike Nichols says that the company has no specific plans to bring VR or Mixed Reality to the Xbox consoles. This is a touch surprising to me, as the PlayStation VR continues to be one of the most accessible and affordable VR options on the market, and sony is reaping in the benefits accordingly.

Street Fighter 5 Loot Boxes

A recent update to the popular fighting game adds a somewhat controversial feature: randomized loot. Menat, one of the playable characters, has started up a fortune shop, where players can spend 500 Fight Money, the in-game currency, and you get a reading. These readings award the player with randomized items. These items, including cosmetics, can only be used in single player game modes, so this will not affect multiplayer functionality. Why add this so late is beyond me.

Pokemon Go Assault

A 71-year-old man and his adult son beat up a Pokémon Go player in Kirkwood recently. According to bystanders, the victim had accused the pair of cheating at the game and threw a Gatorade bottle into their car. This prompted the two to exit the vehicle and assault the man, one holding him down while the other struck him repeatedly. The two are facing third-degree assault charges while the victim is being treated for his injuries. Jesus Christ people, can we not just play a game without being angry at each other? The victim shouldn’t have been, forgive my language, a dickhead. But the pair of men took it way too far attacking a dude.

That’s all for today. Check back tomorrow for another news segment thing probably. I have another guest review coming, just need to format it, so stay tuned for that. Otherwise, have a great day!

Tuesday 6-19-18: Pokemon Go Trade Support, Nintendo TV Show, and Beyond Good and Evil 2 Beta

I’m not dead! I promise! Here’s today’s news.

  • Pokemon Go Trading
  • Nintendo TV Show
  • Beyond Good and Evil 2 Playable Beta?

Pokemon Go Trading

pokemon go trading
In a recent announcement by developer Niantic, the popular mobile game will FINALLY be getting player-to-player trading. It’s not that simple, however. First, you have to share your friend code with another person, and register each other as friends. After this, you only need to be level 10 to be allowed to trade. Performing these trades requires a very large amount of stardust, I’m talking 1,000,000 dust to trade in a worst-case scenario. If you want to make it cost less, you can improve your friendship level with the person. You do this by participating in raids with them, or by sending them gift items (now findable at pokestops). You have to be a certain friend level to trade legendaries, as well. More details can be found in the Niantic post about it.

Nintendo TV Show

nintendo disney tv show
Nintendo has teamed up with Disney to produce a competitive video game show. Titled the Nintendo Switch Family Showdown, the show pits four families against each other in a series of challenges on the Nintendo Switch console. This ranges from finding coins in Super Mario Odyssey to direct matches in Mario Tennis Aces. No word on when the show will launch, but there better be a Mario Party episode.

Beyond Good and Evil 2 Beta Date?

Beyond Good and Evil 2 Beta
The game made waves at last year’s E3, and again at this years with a new cinematic trailer. While the release date of the game remains uncertain, game director Michel Ancel stated that “we aim for a playable beta for the end of next year” on Instagram. So here’s hoping to that.

That’s all for today! Tune in tomorrow for more news and such. Starting Wednesday, I’ll be posting a series of guest reviews from some other journalists I know, Stay tuned for that, some of them are pretty good. Just remember that, while they are on my site, they do not reflect my own personal thoughts on these games, simply the guest writer’s.

Tuesday 5-8-18: Fortnite: Infinity Wars, Kinect Usage, and Pokemon Go Fest

Not much news going on today. It’s mostly just things I didn’t report on yesterday, to be honest. Here is that news.

  • Fortnite/Infinity War Promotional Mashup
  • The Kinect Lives On
  • Pokemon Go Fest is Back

Fortnite: Infinity Wars

The popular battle royale game has it’s first licensed promotional event, called the “Infinity Gauntlet Limited Time Mashup.” Here’s how it works.

When you enter a the solo-only game mode, a meteor will fall within the safe zone. This meteor will have the Infinity Gauntlet. Whoever claims the gauntlet first will transform into Thanos. Should Thanos be defeated in battle, they will drop the gauntlet, leaving it ripe for the picking by someone else.

The Kinect

Microsoft recently announced that the Kinect technology will live on in a project called Azure. This will integrate the hardware into their cloud computing system for the development of better AI. They also stated that a new generation connect will help provide a better HoloLens experience. To be honest, it’s all a bit out of my scope, So you may want to read this article if you want a better understanding of what’s it’s all about.

Pokemon Go Fest 2: The Refestening

Despite the otherwise disaster of last year’s Pokemon Go Fest, developer Niantic has announced that they’re doing it again. Taking place in Chicago from July 14 to July 15. Pokémon GO Fest 2018: A Walk in the Park is already in the works for those wanting to attend. A representative has stated that while it’s a two-day event, players can only purchase one day. This is to promote more people from being able to participate in the events and festivities. You can find more information about this on their website.

That’s all for today. Thanks for reading! Check back tomorrow for more news, views, and some jazzy blues (not really). Otherwise, have a great day!

Thursday 4-19-18: Battlefield Royale, Fornite Comet, and GO Spoofer Bans

Doing news in the morning is really working well for me. It’s much easier to do regularly this way. Here’s the news.

  • Battlefield V Battle Royale
  • Fortnite Comet Rituals
  • Pokemon Go Spoofers

Battlefield Royale

According to an anonymous source at VentureBeat, developer DICE is currently working on creating a battle royale game mode (akin to Fortnite and PUBG) for their most recent Battlefield game. EA has declined for comment about it, so take it with a grain of salt. I wouldn’t put it past EA, though.

Fornite Final Coming

Fortnite players have been donning their tin foil hats recently when a strange looking comet has been gradually growing over a central area known as Tilted Towers. At first, it was just a weird site, but players are reporting more as of late. Some have seen an abundance of shooting stars in the area, others have noticed that telescopes have appeared on the game map at Tilted Towers. Some players have noted that when in the area, their controllers vibrate to say “SOSD5418” in Morse code. Since Tilted Towers is set in location D5, people believe this means the comet will crash on the spot on 4-18, yesterday. I think it might also mean 5-4-18, or May 4, 2018, which would be in about two weeks. Since the current Fortnite season is space themed, it’s possible that the comet will act as a dramatic closing. We will see. Stay tuned.

Pokemon Go Spoofers

According to the Pokemon Go community, developers Niantic have banned a large number of location spoofers for iOS devices. Spoofing communities have been in an uproar, reporting the game as 1 star, as well as the game HQ on Google Maps. As someone who’s been strong-armed out of gyms immediately by spoofers on many occasions, I’m happy to see progress being made to stop these people.

The podcast is going great! New episode tomorrow morning, this time about To the Moon. More information on that here. Be sure to check back tomorrow for the latest game news. Otherwise, have a great night!

thelizardrock daily news friday

Friday 1-5-18: Mad Catz, Paladins: Battlegrounds, Burnout Paradise HD, and Pokemon GO in China.

Friday is here and I cannot be happier its the weekend. Work killed me this week. Here’s the news.

  • Mad Catz is making a comeback
  • Paladins announced a Battle Royale mode
  • Burnout Paradise HD Remaster in Japan
  • Pokemon GO in China

Mad Catz Cant Stop won’t Stop
The popular gaming peripheral creator was 27 years old last year when they filed for bankruptcy. This caused an upset stir amongst gamers, who had grown to know the Mad Catz brand as that controller you’re parents would get when they didn’t want to buy officially licensed controllers. Turns out they’re not done yet. A video announcement was made saying that Mad Catz is back again, this time branding themselves as high-end gaming gear to compete with brands like Razor. GG Mad Catz, keep on living the dream.

Paladins: Battlegrounds
That title sounds like a joke, but it isn’t. Paladins have announced that they are working to release a new update to the game, featuring a new game mode called Battlegrounds. As you may expect, this is a battle royale style game mode, pitting 100 players against each other to be the last one standing. The free-to-play aspect of Paladins attracted many fans to the hero shooter, though it looks like being the poor man’s Overwatch wasn’t enough. Personally, I’m fairly disinterested in this bandwagoning. You can watch the announcement trailer here.

Burnout Paradise HD
Early December we heard rumors of an HD remake of the open world racing game coming to consoles worldwide. the rumors were based on retailer listings. Now EA has announced that a Burnout Paradise HD Remaster will be coming to PlayStation 4 in Japan on March 16. While it seems the rumors are true, this brings up the question. What about the rest of the world? Its possibly Sony manages an exclusivity deal, though we really have nothing but speculation to go on right now. Maybe time will tell. I used to play Paradise, great game.

Pokemon GO in China
The mobile game was originally banned in China due to government concerns. Niantic has recently announced that they are partnering with Chinese publisher NetEase to bring the game to the country. They are looking to make the game ready by the second half of 2018. Good for China.

That’s all! Thank goodness. I’d love to say how ready I am to relax this weekend, but I have a hefty backlog of journalism work to catch up on. Tomorrow will be a pretty long day of work as well. Though I derive much more enjoyment from this job than my day job. My favorite part is writing your you, the reader! Check back Monday to hear what cool news has happened this weekend. Otherwise, have a great night!
