Super Smash Bros Ultimate Game and Watch Racist Native American

Super Smash Bros to Remove Native American Portrayal

Nintendo was accidentally racist recently when people discovered that a character in Super Smash Bros Ultimate depicted a Native American.

In a recent live stream, showing off gameplay of the upcoming Smash Bros game, viewers noticed that the “Side Smash” attack done by Mr Game and Watch was stylized like a Native American attacking with fire. While the intention was to reference an old game the character originated from, the gaming community found this far less savory than the company expected.

To be specific, the fighter was posing after Fire Attack, and LCD screen game from 1982 for the Game and Watch handheld. In the game, the player controls a cowboy that has to defend their wooden fort by Native Americans attacking with firey torches.

In the Smash Bros attack, the character bore a feather headdress, cementing the reference to the culture.

You can probably see why showcasing Native Americans as a violent tribal character could be seen as offensive. Once this was made aware via social media, Nintendo responded (via Eurogamer), apologizing and promising to remove the headdress.

“Nintendo has been planning to distribute an update for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate that removes the feather from the silhouette of Mr. Game & Watch. The original game on which this depiction of the character is based was released more than three decades ago and does not represent our company values today.

We sincerely apologise that this change was not noticed in our marketing material and are continuing our work to make Super Smash Bros. Ultimate an experience that is both welcoming and fun for everyone.”

The 80’s were a bit of a racist time. I can see how it’s hard to reference classic characters without occasionally embodying their unsavory views of the time. It’s cool that Nintendo was so polite and professional about the issue.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate Trailer

Nintendo Releases New Super Smash Bros Ultimate Trailer

A new trailer has joined the battle! Nintendo has released a new gameplay trailer for the upcoming party fighting game Super Smash Bros Ultimate.

While this isn’t exactly on the same level of punch as your average Super Smash Bros reveal, it does shed some greater light on what players can expect from the gameplay itself. Lasting a little under a minute in length, the video quickly cuts between many of the already confirmed fighters for the game. It concludes by showing off some Final Smash attacks.

The first noteworthy thing I saw was that Kirby’s rock drop attack (down+B, down special, whatever you want to call it) can now transform the pink protagonist into a Shiekah Chest, from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. This makes almost no difference to the game mechanically, but it’s cool to see all the same.

The most noteworthy thing, however, was the Final Smash attacks. It shows off Pac Man, Bowser, Link, Ridley, and Mega Man. While a few are the same as they were in Smash 4, some have been changed. Game director Sakurai spoke previously about wanting to streamline the Final Smash process, after all. Pac Man now streaks across the screen rapidly and Bowser performs a powerful punch from behind the stage.

All in all, this is just something to remind us that Super Smash Bros Ultimate isn’t far away.

Monday 8-27-18: Madden Tournament Shooting, Smash Bros is 2018’s Best Seller, and The Weird Cube in Fortnite

Here’s another one of those things week call the work week. And in that, is the news. Here is that news.

  • Madden Tournament Shooting
  • Smash Bros Best Seller of 2018
  • The Weird Fortnite Cube

Mass Shooting in Florida

Over the weekend was the Madden NFL 19 tournament in Jacksonville, Florida. The event was cut short when a shooter open fired, killing two, injuring nine, and then turning the gun on themselves. As a rule for myself, I don’t report the names or identities of shooters when this happens. But in the interest of journalistic integrity, I feel it’s important to note that the shooter was a competitor for the tournament who had lost earlier on. If you want, the moment was captured on stream, and footage of the event can be viewed on Timothy Burke’s Twitter. Be wary.

My sympathies go out to the friends and family of Elijah Clayton and Taylor Robertson, AKA Trueboy and Spotme. I wish a healthy recovery for those injured as well.

Smash Bros Ultimate: 2018 Best Seller

We’ve seen a lot of amazing titles this year. God of War, Monster Hunter: World, and more have already established themselves as GOTY contender. And yet, Super Smash Bros is beating them in sales. Not releasing until December, the party fighting game’s preorders have already exceeded that of the previous titles. This doesn’t come as a great surprise. The Smash Bros series has always been one of Nintendo’s greatest properties. I may have to set a preorder, myself. There might not be any available on release day at this rate.

Fortnite and the Giant Cube

We’re starting to approach the end of the current season on Fortnite. Which means the weird, in-game events are back. It began with regular lightning strikes, gradually destroying cacti. After increasingly frequent strikes, a large purple cube formed on the map. Attacking the cube causes it to attack back, often knocking the player far away from their destination. You can actually see the cube forming on Ninja’s stream during a summer Skirmish event. The season ends late September, so expect things to keep building until then.

Wednesday 6-27-18: Smash Bros Ultimate Stages and a Binding of Issac Card Game

I finally got some cleaning done around the house. But it’s left me late to do work. Here’s the news.

  • Smash Bros Ultimate won’t Have All Stages
  • The Binding of Issac Card Game

Smash Bros Stages

According to a translated interview with Nate Bihldorff and Bill Trinen, Super Smash Bros Ultimate will not have all of the previous games’ stages. When they announced that the game will have every single playable character in the series in this single iteration, speculation started that the same would be true for stages. They did clarify that “a whole lot of them” will be there, however.

The Binding of Card Games

There’s a new game on the Edward McMullen roster of game, The Binding of Issac: Four Souls. This is a multiplayer card game based in the BoI universe. It’s described as many players working together to gather loot and fight bosses. I’m not much a fan of the series, so I didn’t look THAT hard into this, to be honest. For more information, check out the game’s Kickstarter page, which has raised $337,000+ since it opened on Wednesday.

That’s all for today, thanks for tuning in. Good news, I’m back on the Alexa ranks! Alas, it’s at a humble 16 million. But hey, at least I have an Alexa rank again. Tune in tomorrow for more news. Otherwise, have a great day!
