Thursday 8-23-18: Supermassive’s 4 Games and Streamers Protesting Twitch Prime Changes

See? More news! I told you this day would come. Here is that news.

  • Until Dawn Developers Dedicated to Four Games
  • Streamers Protest Recent Twitch Prime Ad Change

Supermassive Quadrilogy

First reported by Kotaku, The developers behind Until Dawn intend to develop four games, each dedicated to classic horror movie subgenres. Formally referred to as the Dark Pictures Anthology, it began with Until Dawn, with the currently in development Man of Medan up next. I look forward to seeing what they have planned.

Twitch Turbo Changes

People were upset when Twitch announced that the partnership bonus, Twitch Prime, would be losing their ad-free feature. The service was available for anyone with Amazon Prime, offering benefits such as a free monthly sub, monthly games, and (until next month) ad-free viewing. To protest this, many partnered streamers have been disabling their ad option in protest. It’s noted that this only effects partnered streams that opt out, and the ads everywhere else on the site go purely to Twitch, and not the streamers, so they will still be present.

That’s all for today. Tune in tomorrow for another news before the weekend hits. Otherwise, have a great day!

Tuesday 8-21-18: Hat in Time DLC/Co-op/Switch Port, Sekiro’s Release Date, Twitch Prime Ad Changes, Life is Strange 2 Reveal Trailer

It’s a heavy news day! Lots to discuss. So here’s a rare, four-topic news post. Forgive me if they’re small segments.

  • A Hat in Time DLC, Co-op, Switch Port
  • FROM’s Sekiro’s Release Date
  • Twitch Prime Ad Changes
  • Life is Strange 2 Reveal Trailer

Two Hats in Time

Remember A Hat In Time, the adorable 3D platformer released not long ago? Developers Gears for Breakfast recently released an announcement trailer detailing their upcoming DLC. Titled “Seal the Deal,” it features a cruise ship run by adorable seals. They also announce a new game mode called Death Wish, which is like an extra difficult boss mode. They then announce a new co-op update is coming to the PC game on September 13. Lastly, they announce a Nintendo Switch version of the game, which will be “coming soon.” Perhaps we’ll have to make a Cozy Co-op episode about a Hat in Time soon.

Sekiro Release Date

According to a tweet by the game’s official Twitter, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice has a release date! March 22 of next year. Originally in Japanese, the tweet roughly translates to the following.

‘”Sekiro: SHADOWS DIE TWICE” will be released simultaneously worldwide on Friday, March 22, 2019. I hope you’ll enjoy it.’

So hey, that’s cool. It’s not too far away when you think about it.

Twitch Prime, Now with Ads

When Amazon bought out Twitch, the popular live streaming service, they implemented a new special status called Twitch Prime. This was a free upgrade to Twitch users who also had Amazon Prime. It offered the same benefits as Twitch Turbo, an alternate upgrade service.

One of the features of Twitch Prime was ad-free viewing. There are quite a few ads on Twitch, so having a way to mitigate them without an ad blocker was quite appealing. Now Twitch has announced that Twitch Prime will no longer offer ad-free viewing, starting next month. Twitch Turbo will continue to offer the service, however. So those wanting ad-free viewing will have to add another nine dollars a month.

Frustrating, to say the least.

Life is Strange 2

At long last, we have a trailer for Life is Strange 2. Instead of me talking about it, since I don’t have much to say, how about I just post the video below?

That’s all for today, tune in tomorrow for more fun, flirty news. Otherwise, have a great day!

Monday 4-9-18: Rick and Morty Comics, Sexy LoL Girl, and the Paul Brothers.

Another week, another wonk. What is a wonk? Where can I find a wonk of my own? I don’t know. What I do know is the news. Here is that news.

  • Rick and Morty Comic Book
  • League of Legends Sexy Girl Problem
  • Paul Brothers’ Twitch Drama

Dungeon Riiiick

This isn’t actually video game related, but its very video game adjacent. IDW Publishing announced that a Rick and Morty comic book, based in a Dungeons and Dragons themed world, is due for release this August. One of the co-writers is quoted as saying the idea was “some serious you-got-chocolate-in-my-peanut butter $#!& right there.” Make of that what you will.

Riot Games’ Rowdy Girl

The creator of League of Legends recently released a new hero, Kai’Sa. She is covered in a parasitic creature thing that helps her fight, not entirely unlike Bayonetta. Fans were off-put by the deep V-neck style of the alien bodysuit, claiming its overly sexual, and contradicting of the developer’s past statements to not sexualize their characters. Riot responded saying that, while they kinda knew it was a touch scandalous, they had to show off some skin in order for people to be able to see that she was a human in a monster suit, and not simply a monster herself. Of all of the excuses to have a scantily clad woman, this might be the most legitimate one I’ve heard yet. They’re small character models, after all.

The Paul Brothers

Frankly, I don’t much like talking about these guys. I don’t like them. Regardless, I shall cast aside my personal bias in order to bring you the news. This is a two-part news bit, the first is in regards to Jake Paul and Summit1G. Summit is one of the biggest Twitch streamers right now. Earlier this week, he livestreamed a game of Fortnite with controversial YouTuber Jake Paul. Unsurprisingly, many of the members of his community were unhappy with the association and expressed it so. Summit responded defensively, claiming that if they were genuinely upset about him playing with Jake, they weren’t true summit fans. This led to an even stronger uproar, to the point that his next livestream was titled “do not donate or sub. I also will not be reading chat. it’s gonna be awkward.” What did you think was going to happen, man?

The other bit was Sunday, when the other brother, Logan Paul, ran his first Twitch livestream, also playing Fortnite. Almost immediately, his chat was filled with dicks. ASCII art style penises were being spammed by many members of the chat. It became so bad that after a point, his producer could be heard on stream say “There are so many dicks . . . We got spammed so fast.” Logan has since stated that he wants to promote a positive and friendly environment and that once he reaches affiliate status, he will enable subscriber-only chat mode. What interested me was that, given his fame, he likely could have contacted Twitch and requested immediate partner status. I’d be surprised if he wasn’t accepted.

Quite an interesting news week, if I say so myself. I hope you enjoyed our first Guest Article! It was a recounting of The Legend of Zelda Symphony that took place last year in Columbus, Ohio, by guest writer Sara H. Check back tomorrow for another fun news update. Otherwise, have a great night!

Monday 3-5-18: Final Fantasy Hacks and Mario is a Plumber

Welcome back to another fun day of recapping the weekend. Heres the news.

  • Twitch Clarifies Clothing Rules
  • Final Fantasy XV PC Crack
  • Bethesda to Attend E3
  • Mario is Still a Plumber

Twitch Clears Up Clothes

When the popular live streaming service announced an upcoming rule change, folks were confused as to what they meant exactly. This led the company to clarify. According to Twitch, when a streamer is broadcasting, the clothing they wear should be appropriate to the content of the stream. So “workout clothes would be appropriate for a fitness stream and a swimsuit would be appropriate for a stream from a public beach.”

Personally, I hate this. Twitch has a problem with low-key lewd streams, where women wear revealing clothing, promoting adult oriented snapchats in exchange for subs. Now Twitch is saying that their outfits are acceptable because of the streaming content. They’re feeding an increasingly toxic aspect of the site. But hey, it makes them money.

Final Fantasy XV Crack

Hackers hit a new record when they successfully bypassed Final Fantasy XV’s DRM system 4 days before it even launches. Chinese hacking group 3DM discovered that the Chapter one demo of the game was unencrypted and DRM free. Using that in conjunction with the preload files of the game on Origin, they have managed to crack the game in its entirety. I won’t provide links, but I’d be lying if I wasn’t impressed.

E3 2018: Featuring Bethesda

the major game publisher has announced their participation at this year’s E3 with a cute papercraft video. What do they have planned this year, I wonder. They tend to have some fairly cool announcements saved for the event. Though there’s no way of knowing until it happens. When it does, I’ll be sure to let you all know.

Mario is a Plumber After All

Pitchforks flew when Nintendo announced that Mario was no longer a plumber. It made sense, when was the last time he did any plumbing? Regardless, fans were saddened by the canonical declaration. Well, now Nintendo has thrown us for another loop when their Japanese website updates to state that Mario’s occupation is a plumber. When translated into English, Mario’s bio says “occupation is plumber.” So now I don’t know what to think!

Thanks for reading, everyone. Kind of a cool news day. March is also developmental disabilities awareness month. So I wanted to mention one of my favorite charity organizations, Able Gamers. They help those with disabilities get the things they need to play video games, like customized controllers. That’s pretty cool if you ask me. Check back tomorrow for the latest news in video games. Otherwise, have a great night!

Monday 2-26-18: Blockchains, Zenyatta, and Girl Streamers

Welcome to another week! It’s Monday and boy do I have news. Here is that news.

  • Ubisoft is Interested in Blockchains
  • Overwatch lets Zenyatta Walk
  • Twitch Offers a Grant for Girls

Blockchains and Business Buzzwords

You read it correctly, Ubisoft is interested in blockchains. Their research facility, Strategic Innovation Lab, recently expressed interest in using the complex information storage system to track user-owned content. Imagine if you owned your DLC the same way you would own Bitcoin. It’s an interesting idea that I don’t really understand, to be honest.

Zenyatta Uses His Feet

Overwatch’s social media game has always been fairly on point. Their public relations too. I recall when last Christmas they had Jeff Kaplin sitting in a chair for 8 hours, which quickly went viral. Now they’ve found a new way to upset their fans in the best way. They released footage of Zenyatta using his feet to walk, instead of his usual floating. You can see it for yourself, if you dare.

1,000 Dreams Fund’s Twitch Broadcasther Grant

That’s not a typo from me. According to the website, it’s “Broadcasther” grant. I get it’s supposed to be broadcast-her, but I’m reading it as a “th” sound. I digress. This grant is a new program between Twitch and 1,000 Dreams Fund to encourage more female livestreamers. They will reward 2 high school/college students with $2,000 for the purpose of furthering their live stream career. If you’re an up and coming female streamer, or just want to learn more about this program, you can visit the 1000 Dreams Fund website. Applications will open Thursday, March 1, at 9 AM EST.

Thanks for your patience with my missing days. The new computer is working fantastically. With any luck, I can start casually live streaming. No, I’m not going for that grant. Check back tomorrow for another post full of nifty news! Otherwise, have a great night!

Epic Explains Fortnite Issues
Recently there has been a technical vulnerability called Meltdown. This bug allowed you to access CPU processes one would otherwise not be allowed to access. When Epic updated their cloud software to protect themselves from the bug, it caused a huge spike in CPU usage. This has resulted in gameplay issues and login issues. Epic apologizes for the problems, and is working towards fixing it as soon as they can.

Yet Another Monster Hunter Beta
That’s right, another one. This one will be from January 18 at 6:00 PM PST until January 21 at 6:00 PM PST. Only PlayStation members will be able to participate. This is only a few days before the game’s console release of January 26. There will be new monsters in this beta session, including the game’s flagship monster, the Nergigante. I’m sold on this game at this point, though some early game time is certainly fine by me.

Capcom has also announced that one of the returning beasts to Monster Hunter World will be the Deviljho, the powerful monster known for eating its own severed tail.

Belgium Clarifies They’re Plans
Last year we heard that Belgium’s gaming commission is looking to ban loot boxes in video games because they are gambling. Recently they have clarified that they have not made an official conclusion, but that they are beginning investigation towards that concept. They are also looking into eSports betting. There will be more to report on this once the gaming commission reaches a conclusion.

GDQ Chat Causes Controversy
At This year’s GDQ, the organizers decided to set the official Twitch stream into Sub Only mode in order to reduce spam and make it easier to moderate. They stated that all sub earnings would be donated to charity. Regardless, people were unhappy they had to pay to chat, so people flooded over to account channels made purely with the intent of hosting GDQ and allowing users to chat as they want. Funny enough, one major host account, GDQ_Poverty, was flooded with hateful comments and remarks, resulting in the channel being banned. Its a big mess, you can read more about it in the news post I wrote here.

So… Much.. News…
Today was a rough day. My day job ran 2 hours longer than normal, and as you can see, lots of weekends news. Forgive me if my writing isn’t its strongest. I finished a new longform article about mobile apps that are video game styled life organizers, you can read about it here. Be sure to check back tomorrow for the latest news. Otherwise I’m writing to a brick wall. Otherwise, have a great night!

thelizardrock daily news tuesday

Tuesday 12-5-17: Cuphead, UFC Stream, Mega Man 11, FNaF 6, Darkest Dungeon DLC, A Hat Early in Time.

It’s Tuesday! That means I accidentally forgot to post on Monday again. once again, I’m sorry. the new FNaF game caught me by surprise, but more on that later. here’s the news from the last 3 days:

  • Cuphead Updates
  • Twitch Streamer broadcast a UFC fight
  • Mega Man 11?!
  • A new Five Nights at Freddy’s game??
  • Darkest Dungeon DLC
  • A Hat in Time released early

The Cupdate
Studio MDHR has recently released a new major update for their hit game, Cuphead. This update will include a number of changes to the game. This will include improvements to the game engine, as well as some gameplay modifications for fairness sake. This will cause some big uprooting to the Speedrunning scene. You can read the full list of changes at the Changelog posted on the developer’s website.

UFC Live Broadcast
Saturday night was the UFC 218 fight. To view this event, you had to purchase it via Pay Per View. One clever Twitch streamer decided to broadcast the fight on the video game oriented streaming service, Twitch. How did he not get stricken down for copyright claims? He held a controller and pretended to be playing the recently released, EA UFC 3. This allowed him to go under the radar from admins, by the time news of his exploits went nationwide, the fight was over, and his archived footage deleted. When asked if he is worried about repercussions, he stated that he doesn’t think Twitch will do anything. So far he’s right, no action has been taken by Twitch, UFC, or EA regarding the event. The streamer is called Lester_Gaming and can be found here.

Mega Man 11
That’s no joke, Mega Man 11 has been announced. Capcom recently released a trailer premiering the next in the line of Mega Man games for next year. The last game having released 7 years ago, was a retro homage to the classic series of NES games. Now they are taking is in a modern direction with updated graphics, sound, and design, while keeping the style true to the originals. More details will be released next year, for now, you can see the trailer for yourself here.

Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria Simulator
The next in the line of Five Nights at Freddy’s titles have been released. Creator of the series, Scott Cawthorn, had teased this previously, stating that he wouldn’t go an entire year without releasing something new. The game initially appears to be an 8-bit arcade game, where the player throws pizzas at kids. It doesn’t take long to discover what this really is. I played about 30 minutes of the game, which you can watch here. It’s an interesting combination of classic FNaF and a new creative spin, and I’m all for it. Best of all, its free! You can download the game at no cost on Steam.

Darkest Dungeon: Color of Madness
The dark and gritty RPG will be receiving another DLC pack after the vampiric success of their previous one, The Crimson Court. The Color of Madness is an HP Lovecraft style campaign where the player deals with a comet having fallen to earth. Full of cosmic horrors, the DLC will include a new wave-based mode, a new enemy faction, and a collection of new monsters, items, and powerful trinkets. You can see the announcement post for yourself here.

A Hat Earlier in Time
The Console release of the cute platformer was scheduled for December 6, tomorrow. In a surprise turn of events, the game has released tonight for the NA Playstation 4 Market. You can get the game now on American Playstation 4s for $29.99, and tomorrow for EU PS4 and Xbox One for the same price. What a fun little surprise.

Phew, lot’s of news. I’m excited about a fair bit of it. Thanks for reading, everyone. Check back tomorrow for the latest and greatest in video game news. otherwise, Have a great night!
