Guacamelee

Tuesday 10-9-18: Guacamelee on Switch, Borderlands 2 VR, and Pikachu’s New Hat

What a better day than a Tuesday to announce some game stuff. Why? Don’t ask me. Here’s that news.

  • Guacamelee is Coming to Nintendo Switch
  • Borderlands 2 gets PSVR Treatment
  • Pikachu Wears a Douchey Hat

Guacamelee on Switch

According to developers Drinkbox Studios, the luchador style platformer (Metroidvania, I suppose) will be coming to the Nintendo Switch. The first game is actually available now in the Nintendo eShop, with the sequel to be made available later this year. If you’re a fan of the genre, and of Mexican food, I recommend taking a look.

Borderlands 2 VR

Gearbox has announced plans for a PlayStation VR adaption of their hit shooter from 2012, Borderlands 2. The game will feature standard VR controls, as well as a new BAMF mode, which temporarily slows time for everyone but the player. The VR adaptions will not support multiplayer, however. It releases on December 14 for $49.99. It’s a bit steep if you ask me. But Skyrim did the same thing, I suppose.

If it cost $30, I’d have been much more inclined to get it.

Pikachu’s new hat

Do you ever look at your Pokemon and wonder what it’d be like if they smoked JUULs and didn’t tip their waitress? Don’t worry! There’s a Pikachu for you. A new outfitted variation of the electric mouse has appeared in Pokemon GO recently, sporting a new, tilted cap. Players will also discover a new selection of clothing items for their avatars, also sporting the same thunderbolt logo.

Apparently, this is part of a collaboration between clothing company Fragment. Dubbed “Thunderbolt Project,” the company is releasing a line of real life, Pokemon-themed clothing some time next year. To promote the crossover, players can get these items in their game.

That’s all for today, folks. Thanks for tuning in. Come back tomorrow for another news post thing of the news. Yes. Otherwise, have a great day!

Oculus Quest

Thursday 9-27-18: Fallout 76 Not Crossplay, Red Dead 2’s 105GB Size, Oculus’s Standalone VR System

look! I’m doing news! Here is that news.

  • Fallout 76 Won’t Have Crossplay
  • Red Dead 2 is 105GB Large
  • The new “Oculus Quest” VR Headset

Fallout 76 Crossplay

Remember a bit back when Bethesda harshed on PlayStation for not supporting crossplay? Well now that they (kinda) do, The game studio has stepped back out to say that their upcoming RPG will not support crossplay in general. Bethesda boss Pete Hines remarked, saying that while the idea isn’t impossible in the future, their focus on the upcoming BETA and launch means the idea is not possible right now.

Red Dead 2 is Large

There’s a promo with the upcoming Red Dead Redemption 2. Interested consumers can purchase a PS4 Pro bundled with the game. An image of the bundle box has revealed a few things about the game. PS4 players will be given exclusive content, the game will support up to 32 players, and you will need 105GB of hard drive space. That’s 1/3rd the size of a base PS4’s default hard drive, oof. That’s a big game.

Oculus Quest

Oculus, one of the leading VR hardware organizations, has announced a new project under the name “Quest.” This is a standalone VR system. That means no PC needed, no phone, no console, just a wire-free VR setup. The system will support various Oculus games, citing ” Robo Recall, The Climb, and Moss” as examples. The entire system will cost a total of $399. No word on how “good” it is yet.

If this is as good as it seems, it may be the best introductory VR setup yet.

That’s all for today, folks. Thanks for reading. Tune in tomorrow for one more news before the weekend. Otherwise, have a great day!

Wednesday 8-22-18: D.Va’s Animated Short, Vive Wireless Adapter Release, and Gabe Newell’s Dota 2 Voice Pack

News! Read it!

  • Vive Wireless Adapter Release Date
  • D.Va’s Shooting Star Overwatch Video
  • The Dota 2 Gabe Newell Announcer Pack

Vive’s Wireless Adapter

According to a recent post on the Vive blog, the Wireless Adapter for the HTC Vive will release publicly on September 24, with preorders opening up on September 5. The standard version costs $299, while the Pro version costs $359. As the name implies, this is Valve’s official method of eliminating cables in the virtual reality process. It’s noted that you need a free PCI-e slot to install the receiver card. I wish I could afford one.

Shooting Star

Blizzard released a new animated short, featuring modern-day D.Va. She’s the leader of a protective task force for the Korean city of Busan. I won’t go into detail about it, just watch for yourself.

Also, Busan will be a new control map in Overwatch, based in the city from the short.

Gabe Newell Dota Announcer Pack

Valve founder Gabe Newell is now a Mega Kill pack available in Dota 2. The catch? He’s only available to those subscribed to Dota +, their monthly subscription service for aiding player improvement. It was announced via this entertaining video of Newell in the recording room.

Tuesday 7-3-18: LA Noire VR DRM Block, Super Mario Run’s $60 Mil, and More Info on Fallout 76

Groggy morning it seems, but one ripe with news, at least. Here is that news.

  • LA Noire VR Players Blocked by DRM Issue
  • Super Mario Run Grossed $60 Million
  • Todd Howard Talks About Fallout 76 More

DRM Noire

There have been reports that LA Noire VR edition on Steam has been entirely unplayable recently for those who bought it. Users are prompted to put in their product key for the game, despite it being already activated. Should they put their product key in again, it’ll tell them that the key is already in use (by you, of course). This loop has left players unable to play at all for several days now. Developer Rockstar Games is no stranger to bad DRM practices, but it’s unfortunate that this is happening all the same.

Super Mario Run to the Bank

Remember Nintendo’s first actual mobile game? Released in September 2016, Super Mario Run wasn’t exactly the success people were hoping for. That hasn’t stopped the game from making money, however. Recent reports indicate a total gross of $60 million. If you think that’s large, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp earned $20 million in its first two months, and Fire Emblem: Heroes earned over $294 million in its first year. While mobile games may seem like a niche market for casuals and all that elitist garbo, the reality is that it can be an extremely profitable venture, if you have the IPs and the quality of games Nintendo is known for.

Fallout 76 More Information

There has been yet another interview with game producer Todd Howard, and with it, we get a touch more information about Fallout 76. There were quite a few things he touched on, so I’ll just skim through them.

It’s called 76 because he liked the identity it gave. The destruction of bases isn’t so that you can raid and wreck, but so you can break out if someone tried to trap you. That’s why repairs are easy. You cannot kill a player under level 5, to help prevent harassment I guess. There will be fast travel. There will not be mounts. Howard dodged a question asking if other human players can give you missions.

That’s all for today. Thank you, everyone, for reading. Tune in tomorrow for more news. I’ve starting coding up a software bot to play Five Nights at Freddy’s for me. You might hear more about that, should it prove successful. Otherwise, have a great day!

Thursday 6-21-18: No Xbox VR, Street Fighter Loot Boxes, and Pokemon Go Assault Case

I didn’t do news again. It’s been a lethargic week, honestly. But not today! Here’s the news.

  • Microsoft Moves Away from Xbox VR
  • Street Fighter 5 Gets Lootboxes
  • Men Beat up Another Over Pokemon Go

No Xbox VR

According to an interview with Gamesindustry.biz, Microsoft’s chief marketing officer of gaming Mike Nichols says that the company has no specific plans to bring VR or Mixed Reality to the Xbox consoles. This is a touch surprising to me, as the PlayStation VR continues to be one of the most accessible and affordable VR options on the market, and sony is reaping in the benefits accordingly.

Street Fighter 5 Loot Boxes

A recent update to the popular fighting game adds a somewhat controversial feature: randomized loot. Menat, one of the playable characters, has started up a fortune shop, where players can spend 500 Fight Money, the in-game currency, and you get a reading. These readings award the player with randomized items. These items, including cosmetics, can only be used in single player game modes, so this will not affect multiplayer functionality. Why add this so late is beyond me.

Pokemon Go Assault

A 71-year-old man and his adult son beat up a Pokémon Go player in Kirkwood recently. According to bystanders, the victim had accused the pair of cheating at the game and threw a Gatorade bottle into their car. This prompted the two to exit the vehicle and assault the man, one holding him down while the other struck him repeatedly. The two are facing third-degree assault charges while the victim is being treated for his injuries. Jesus Christ people, can we not just play a game without being angry at each other? The victim shouldn’t have been, forgive my language, a dickhead. But the pair of men took it way too far attacking a dude.

That’s all for today. Check back tomorrow for another news segment thing probably. I have another guest review coming, just need to format it, so stay tuned for that. Otherwise, have a great day!

Monday 5-7-18: Oculus Prototypes, E3 Floor Plans, and Nintendo Job Listings

We edge ourselves ever closer to the next day. Here’s the news.

  • Oculus’ Latest VR Prototype
  • E3 Floor Plans
  • Nintendo Hiring Zelda Level Designer

Oculus: Half Dome

Popular VR developer Oculus has announced a new prototype VR headset, one that features 140-degree viewing, varifocal displays, and potentially even eye tracking. The prototype can allegedly achieve a far wider view range, thanks to more advanced fresnel lenses within. It also has varifocal displays, which means two lenses moving back and forth, much like a camera. this should allow for dynamic focus shifting. When combined with eye tracking, seen in various other prototypes, this should allow for better focus on both near and far objects alike. I may not like Oculus as a corporation, but this is certainly a nice device.

E3 Floor Plans

This is exactly what it says on the tin. E3 floor plans have been making their rounds online. Event marketing partner GES has released the floor plans for the event online. This does offer some insight as to who is where, and who has the big spots. It also confirms which publishers and studios are scheduled to attend, like CD Projekt Red and Marvelous America. If you don’t want to have to download the PDFs, ResetEra has image files of the contents on their site.

Zelda Level Designer

Twitter user @bk2128 has translated a Japanese job listing found on the Nintendo website. The listing appears to call for ‘Level designer of “The Legend of Zelda” series.’ The job starts as a three-month trial contract, in which it will be reviewed for whether you’ll be kept for the remainder of the project. Since Breath of the Wild has already finished their last DLC, this listing is presumably for a new Zelda game. All we have to go off of beyond that is speculation, though.

Wednesday 1-24-18: Subnautica Launch, EVE Battle Bust, and Arizona Sunshine

It’s Wednesday and boy are my arms tired. Here’s the news

  • Subnautica Leaves Early Access
  • EVE: Online Battle Results
  • Arizona Sunshine Review

Subnautica Launch
That open world ocean survival game has finally left early access and with that comes a big number of fantastic improvements to the game. For those not familiar with the game, check out their new and improved webpage. Subnautica can be found on Steam for $24.99.

Million Dollar Bust
Yesterday I reported on an upcoming EVE: Online battle that was expected to cost over a million dollars. That battle has now taken place, and the final asset toll tallies up to… $4,000. The battle came up extremely short. This was because 6,000 players arrived at the scene to take place in the expected onslaught. The game servers simply couldn’t handle this much, which caused many players’ games to crash and connections to be lost. So none of the big, expensive plans took place. This is certainly a shame.

Arizona Sunshine
I published a new article on my site, here. It’s a review of the VR shooter, Arizona Sunshine. It’s an amazing game that was ruined by a single flaw. I’ve had this review sitting for months, and it’s been revised numerous times. I wanted to make sure it came out as high quality as it could be. Be sure to check it out.

Thanks for reading. Not much news today. Be sure to check back tomorrow for more up-to-date happenings in the blogosphere. #fleek am I right fellow kids? As always, have a great night!

Arizona Sunshine – An amazing game ruined by a single flaw

Arizona Sunshine
Developed and Published by Vertigo Games.
Released on 6 December 2016.
Available on Playstation VR, HTC Vive and Oculus Rift.

As someone with a great deal of faith in VR, I like to keep in touch with the latest VR games, specifically for the PSVR. When I came across Arizona Sunshine in the PS market, I was intrigued in what appeared to be a rather fleshed out game, but also confused as to why it had such a mixed review. It took me around 6 hours to discover why.

Arizona Sunshine presents itself as a world of arid skies, sandy canyons, and undead dudes. It didn’t immediately translate what kind of game it would be. I was unsure if I should prepare myself for fast paced action or a looming feeling of horror. I was surprised to realize it was more story driven than either of the previous expectations;. You play as a nameless man, a lone wanderer in the middle of zombie-ridden Arizona. His background isn’t actually revealed, leaving the unanswered question of how he got where he was, or how he is as diversely skilled as he is.. The man cracks the occasional joke towards the nearby undead, giving gameplay a less serious tone during slower moments of gameplay. When met with more serious moments, like car alarms attracting a horde, the man’s tone became more concerned and even scared. The dynamic levels of emotion made the man increasingly relatable at the game went on. The game features an approximately 4-hour campaign, one that’s fully voice acted, as well as a wave-based horde mode. Both of these modes can be played cooperatively. It even supported the uncommon PlayStation Aim controller, a rifle-shaped controller designed specifically for the PSVR. I was excited for just such a game; there needs to be more full and fleshed out titles for VR like these. Yet when I checked reviews online, they bounced wildly between flawless praise and pitchforks. The negative reviews centered around the claims that tracking issues made the game unenjoyable. For those with a limited budget, Arizona Sunshine may be asking a lot. It sits at $40–above the market average for VR titles. While this left me with some unease, what is reward without risk? So, I decided to see for myself.

I played it on PSVR and opted for the Aim Controller, which allowed me greater movement control while adding to the immersion of the game. I favor two-handed weapons anyway. The game compensates for this by changing what weapons you come across through the story from one-handed pistols to two-handed rifles, all of which felt satisfying to use. Controller vibrations from firing paired with the squishy pop of heads exploding made me feel lethal, while killing a zombie in one shot made me feel like a calm and composed marksman. This was a stark contrast to when I would lose my cool further on, when I was overrun by a large number of zombies and shooting wildly in fear. The 3 weapon variations (semi-auto rifle, shotgun, and automatic rifle) suited my needs in any situation. Since the later weapons were direct upgrades from what you had, there was no concern about choosing what weapons to keep or swap out.  The controls were clean and easy, It allowed me to move and interact with the world around me while still be able to aim my rifle quickly and accurately at my intended target. All the rifles I came across had a holographic sight for more accurate aiming, and it felt extremely natural with the PS Aim Controller. I was popping off headshots faster than I could ever hope to when using a traditional controller.

Then, I found a sniper rifle. It was equipped with a long range scope and positioned in an ideal location for picking off the zombies in the distance. Here I had my greatest revelation: I would raise the scope to my face, closing one eye to see better, and I had a hard time keeping on target. It made sense; they were really far away, so the smallest twitch would translate to a much larger stagger in my sights. While most shooters simulate this concept by having the reticle sway, it was nothing like how this felt. For the first time in in my videogame life, I felt that the difficulty aiming was my own, a result of my own unsteady hands. It’s never felt so genuine to aim down a scope.

As I progressed further into the game and was able to feel out the controls as well as the environment, the features that make this game so great began to come to light. Being able to walk along the sandy pathways surrounded by canyon walls and under the bright sun felt incredibly natural in VR. The level design was fluid; it guided me as I progressed without needing to tell me where to go. I never was lost and I never was unsure what I was supposed to be doing. The world built here was one of the most immersive places I have experienced in a VR game.

The zombies were an excellent example of what zombies were meant to be. While one lazy bumbling undead was hardly a threat, it was far more dangerous when a large collection of them began to hone in on your location with the specific intent of making you their lunch. They were smart enough to be able to find and approach me, while not being so clever as to do anything more than that. It wasn’t hard to be able to predict their behavior, nor should it be. The perfect accent to this environment was the protagonist. The voiced main character had a humor to him that was entertaining without being overbearing; after all, the world doesn’t need another Duke Nukem. His occasional humored remarks helped ease the tensions of being stuck in a dusty, embittered zombiescape. As you progressed through the campaign and your situation became more serious, it felt like he was treating it accordingly. Everything wasn’t a joke to him, so he treated every situation with the level of emotional maturity that any normal person would. The relatability of the man allowed me to feel how he felt so that even though the game is played alone, you don’t always feel alone.

By this point, I had entirely forgotten about all the reviews criticizing the poor tracking. I was having a blast. After completing the campaign, I tried out the Horde mode. It took getting used to being restricted to a small area, instead of my usual zippy moving tactic, I acclimated quickly. By completing the campaign, I had also unlocked an Apocalypse mode. In this mode, all you have is a large caliber pistol, and a single zombie strike kills you. This is when I decided to use the handheld Move controller instead. Using a two-handed rifle to aim a pistol felt weird. This is where I discovered the issue.

The motion controls with the Move Controller were as you expected, point and teleport. While I don’t prefer this, I understand the limitations of the move controls and a first-person interface. But the aim made the fluidity fall apart. Far too frequently, my weapon did not stay aligned with my controller, tilting too far left, or moving when I held still. This made it substantially harder to aim for the head of zombies at much closer ranges than before. I decided to switch to the standard PS4 controller, the DualShock 4. While the motions felt better with the joysticks, the aiming was even worse. The tilting issue was twice as bad, and the weapon would NEVER stay still, no matter how focused my hands were. Both the Move Controllers and the DualShock 4 were nothing short of frustrating to deal with. It was a struggle to accurately shoot a zombie standing directly in front of me. I hadn’t made it halfway through the first area of the game before being overcome with exasperation and quitting the game entirely. This made the game feel unplayable.

To play Arizona Sunshine with anything other than the Aim Controller was uncomfortable, disjointed, and an overall bad time. I was heartbroken. How could a game I enjoyed so much just the day before feel so awful to play? By this point, it made complete sense why half of the people who played it hated it, and the other  loved it. The PC didn’t have a unified rifle controller for VR to use, and even among PlayStation fans, the PS Aim controller was uncommon. While this game was one of the best VR games I’ve played, only with this particular controller– one that a majority of its users don’t own.

If you own a PSVR as well as the Aim Controller, then I recommend this game. Otherwise, I would not. One single issue, while major, is solely responsible for taking Arizona Sunshine from amazing to impossible to play. Perhaps these issues will be resolved and patched in at some future point. How it is now, it needs work.

Monday 1-22-18: Beat Saber, Call of Duty: Prop Hunt, PlayStation Shoes and Figurines, and Rust Goes Gold

Monday again! For only the 105,297th time. Here’s the weekend news.

  • Beat Saber, the VR slashing rhythm game
  • Call of Duty: WWII to add Prop Hunt
  • PlayStation Shoes by Nike
  • PlayStation Figurines
  • Rust is leaving Early Access

Beat Saber, the Techno Jedi
I like to keep an eye out for new VR games. By that, I mean that I get excited whenever I see them on whatever internet outlet I’m browsing. This time We’ve come across Beat Saber. This game is a rhythm game like guitar hero, except that instead of strumming a plastic guitar, you’re in VR swinging lightsabers at blocks flying at you to the tune of some just stanky dubstep (the good kind of stanky). You can check out their recent teaser trailer here, its hype.

Call of Duty: Prop Hunt
The most recent Call of Duty game, WWII, has a special event taking place called The Resistance. In this event, there are free guns, double exp, and the temporary return of Demolition mode. The most notable feature, however, is the tease of a Prop Hunt mode. According to the event’s website page, players can participate in Prop Hunt, a hide and seek game mode inspired by the popular Garry’s Mod game. This event will be playable February 6 to 12, and 20 to 27. Get in on it while you can. You can watch a trailer for the Resistance even here.

Played Up Kicks
Do you like PlayStation? Do you like shoes? Well we put PlayStation into some shoes for you, dawg. Sony has partnered with Nike and Paul George to come up with the PG2 PlayStation Colorways. This sweet piece of footwear is decked inside and out with the console’s likeness. It even comes with a Dynamic theme download code! The release date is some time next month, with no word on price. I’m going to guess it’s a lot.
Check out the reveal trailer here.

The Totaku Collection
Ok may you don’t want shoes, how about some figurines instead? Sony has also partnered with Gamestop/ThinkGeek in an entirely unrelated event to bring about a small line of PlayStation game characters as 4-inch tall figurines. The series, called the Totaku Collection, includes 7 different characters, each priced at $9.99. They are as follows.

  • The Hunter, from Bloodborne
  • Crash Bandicoot, Titular
  • Parappa the Rapper, Titular
  • Kratos, from God of War
  • The Feisar FX350 racing ship, from Wipeout
  • Sackboy, from LittleBigPlanet
  • Heihachi, from Tekken

The Figures’ release date is March 23, and they will be sold exclusively at GameStop.

Golden Rust
Remember Rust? That weird open-world survival game where you ran around with a rock for hours and got shot by some random guy with a gun? After 4 years of early access, developers Facepunch Studios have announced that they will be formally releasing the game on February 8, 2018. This means a few things. They will now be focusing on stability and bug squishing, they will update monthly, instead of weekly, and the price of the game has risen from $20 to $35. I’m happy for the developers, and I hope them the best. You can read more about it at the developer blog post.

Long weekend. I went out of town to visit family. I had to do my work with my mini travel laptop (nicknamed The Gecko) since my main computer is garbage when not fully plugged into my mess of cables. I also have been given more work, I’m now writing news posts for Prepslife.com, A Social Prepper Network. Think camping and survival and such.

Friday 1-19-18: We Happy Few Delays, God of War Season Pass, and Accounting+ VR

I’m sorry for disappearing all week. More on that below. otherwise, here’s the news!

  • We Happy Few is delayed
  • God of War won’t have season passes
  • Accounting+ Review

We Happy Few Delays
To the surprise of no one, the horror survival game has been delayed once more. The developers released a video today making the announcement. They believe the the first 2 hours of the campaign aren’t good representations of the game, and want to rework that. To make it up to fans, the also teased the second playable character, Sally.

God of War Seasonless Pass
The game’s director, Cory Balrog, stated in a Tweet that the upcoming God of War game will not have season passes. He also stated that he is having a lot of fun with the game, but that isn’t important to the news part of things. Whether this means that the game won’t have post-launch DLC, or just that the DLC it will have wont be bundled into a season pass style thing remains unknown. Time will tell.

Accounting+ VR Review
I wrote another review recently, this time for the Justin Roiland (Rick and Morty creator) written VR title, Accounting+. I also did a 2 part video of the game, going through what I think is it’s entirety. You can check out the article HERE. Here’s a hint of what I thought: not bad.

Thank you everyone for reading. I’m sorry for not posting all week. I’m going out of town and I had to kick things into gear to get everything done on time. Unfortunately this proved to be a touch exhausting, and the site got put on the back burner. If I ever manage to make writing my full time job, I promise to be MUCH better about my consistency. Come back Monday for the weekend news summed up. Otherwise, have a great night!

Friday 11-17-17: Nintendo Sales, Golden Joystick, and Skyrim Ports

Friday marks the end of the weekday. Good job everyone, you worked hard and deserve to enjoy the weekend. Here’s Friday’s news:

  • Nintendo tops hardware sales in October
  • The 35th Golden Joystick Awards
  • Skyrim comes out for Switch and VR

Nintendo October Sales
Nintendo announced in a press release to have the top hardware sales in October. The NPD Group, which tracks this kind of thing, stated that the number 1 selling hardware that month was the Nintendo Switch. This is no surprise. What is interesting is that the number 2 spot was also Nintendo, specifically the Super NES Classic Edition. The mini version of the old console sold out immediately everywhere. Supply couldn’t meet demand, making the product a rarity. They made enough to take 2nd place in units sold, at least. Good on ya, Nintendo. Though with the release of the Xbox One X this month, I’m willing to bet it won’t happen 2 months in a row.

The 35th Golden Joystick Awards
The UK based award organization takes the public’s votes to determine what the community thinks the best games of the year are. The award ceremony took place recently and the results aren’t surprising. The winner of the Ultimate Game of the Year Award went to… The Legend of Zelda, Breath of the Wild! You can read the 40-something other awards that were given away at this event at the news post I made about it HERE.

Skyrim Ports
Sure the gaming community likes to joke about Skyrim being ported to everything. Well, now those fruits are coming to… fruition. Skyrim has officially released on Nintendo Switch. The portability of the legendary game has people ranting with enjoyment. Skyrim also released for VR. I had about an hour to try out Skyrim on the PSVR last night, and I admit that I was having a lot of fun running around smacking things with a mace and shooting fire from my hands. I might write a feature about Skyrim VR, we will see.

Another day of positivity! I always enjoy news days like this, they make me happy. Knowing that once I’m done with my writing I can go play Skyrim in VR only adds to my excitement. Thanks for reading everyone. Your viewership genuinely is important to me. Its Friday so there won’t be another daily update until Monday. Be sure to check in than to read about the latest and greatest in video game news. Until then, Have a great weekend.
